Chapter 12 - The Serpent in the Nursery

The lights in the Neonatal ICU flared back to life, the steady hum of electricity returning to the incubators.

"Oxygen levels rising! The heaters are active!" Dr. Thorne shouted, re-attaching the mechanical ventilator to Hope’s breathing tube. "Claire, she’s stabilizing! We did it!"

Claire slumped against the wall, clutching her chest, sobbing with pure relief. Her hands were blistered from manually squeezing the rubber pump for twenty agonizing minutes, but she didn't care. Her baby was breathing.

The door to the ward hissed open.

A woman entered, wearing a white doctor’s coat over a dark dress, her face partially obscured by a surgical mask and a sterile cap. She walked quickly toward Hope’s incubator, reaching into her pocket.

"Excuse me, Doctor," Claire called out weakly from her wheelchair. "Who are you? Dr. Thorne is already handling her."

The woman ignored her, unsheathing a glass syringe filled with a clear, colorless liquid—potassium chloride. A lethal dose that would stop an infant’s heart within seconds, mimicking sudden neonatal cardiac arrest.

Claire’s eyes widened. She recognized the diamond-encrusted bracelet peeking out beneath the white sleeve.

"Eleanor!" Claire screamed.

Eleanor ripped down her surgical mask, her aristocratic face contorted with unhinged fury. "I told you, you miserable street rat! No child of yours will ever inherit the Sterling empire!"

Eleanor reached for the IV port connected to Hope’s incubator.

Claire didn't hesitate. Ignoring the tearing agony in her surgical stitches, ignoring the blood soaking through her hospital gown, Claire threw herself out of the wheelchair. She tackled Eleanor around the waist, bringing the older woman crashing down onto the sterile tile floor.

The glass syringe flew from Eleanor's hand, shattering against the metal base of a supply cart.

"Get off me, you filthy whore!" Eleanor shrieked, clawing at Claire’s face with manicured nails, tearing lines into her skin.

Claire didn't feel the pain. Pure maternal rage took over. She pinned Eleanor’s wrists to the floor, her eyes blazing with a fury that terrified the matriarch. "You tried to kill me! You tried to kill my child! I will end you with my bare hands!"

Dr. Thorne rushed over, grabbing Eleanor’s flailing arms, while two security guards burst through the doors, guns drawn.

"Don't move! Both of you, stop!" the guards shouted.

The heavy doors slammed back once more. Julian stood in the entrance, his shirt torn, bruised, blood dripping from his knuckles. He surveyed the scene: his wife bleeding on the floor, the shattered poison syringe, and his mother pinned beneath security officers.

Eleanor looked up at her son, breathing heavily, her pristine facade completely obliterated. "Julian! Control this woman! Look at what she's doing to your mother!"

Julian walked forward slowly. He knelt down beside Claire, gently pulling her up into his arms, wrapping his suit jacket around her shivering shoulders. He kissed her bloodied cheek, his voice a soft, broken whisper. "I'm here, Claire. You saved her. You saved our baby."

Then, Julian looked down at Eleanor.

"Officer," Julian said, his voice ringing with cold, final authority. "Arrest Eleanor Sterling for attempted murder, grand conspiracy, and corporate sabotage. And make sure the handcuffs are tight."

Eleanor stared in horror as the security guards twisted her arms behind her back, the cold steel clicking around her wrists.

"Julian! I am your mother!" Eleanor screamed as they dragged her toward the door. "You cannot do this! The family name! The bloodline!"

"The Sterling name died the moment you pushed my wife," Julian answered without looking back.
