Chapter 7 - The Fragile Thread

Julian arrived at St. Jude’s breathless, taking the stairs two at a time to bypass the crowded elevators. When he pushed through the doors of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the smell of sterile plastic and humidity washed over him.

Claire was already there.

She was sitting in a wheelchair, still dressed in a hospital gown, hooked up to portable IV drips. Her pale face was streaked with fresh tears as she leaned her forehead against the clear acrylic wall of an incubator.

Inside lay the smallest human Julian had ever seen.

Hope Sterling weighed barely two pounds. Her skin was translucent, tiny veins visible beneath the surface. Multiple tubes snaked into her miniature chest, and a respirator hissed rhythmically, keeping her microscopic lungs expanding and contracting.

Julian walked over softly, falling to his knees beside Claire’s wheelchair. He wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his face into her lap.

"Julian..." Claire sobbed softly, resting her trembling hand on his head. "Look at her. She’s fighting so hard... she’s so tiny."

"She’s a fighter, just like her mother," Julian whispered, looking up through the glass. A single tear escaped his eye, tracing a path down his cheek. He extended his pinky finger through the small round porthole in the incubator.

The infant’s hand, no larger than a coin, instinctively curled around his pinky finger.

The grip was astonishingly firm.

Julian choked back a sob. In that fragile, humid incubator lay the entire universe. All the wealth of the Sterling empire, all the corporate wars, all the bloodlines and titles meant nothing compared to the warmth of that miniature hand.

"The doctor told me," Claire whispered, her voice trembling with raw grief and fury. "He said if you hadn't caught me... she would have died instantly. And I would have bled out on the stairs."

"I will never let anyone hurt you again, Claire. Ever," Julian swore, his forehead pressed against the incubator glass.

Claire turned her gaze toward him. The sweet, gentle girl from the midwestern town who had captured Julian’s heart two years ago was gone. In her hazel eyes burned a dark, cold fire forged in the fires of near-death.

"Did you destroy her?" Claire asked.

"I took the company. I froze their accounts. The feds are moving in," Julian answered honestly. "Arthur Vance is their last line of defense. If he can execute the trust clause before our daughter stabilizes, he will try to wrest control."

Claire leaned down, her lips brushing Julian’s ear. "Arthur Vance has a mistress, Julian. A woman named Diana Cross. She was my mother's friend back in Chicago. Diana has Arthur’s private financial ledger—the one he uses to blackmail Eleanor."

Julian pulled back, stunned. "How do you know that?"

"Because before she fell into a coma, my mother warned me never to trust the Sterlings," Claire said, a chilling smile touching her lips. "I didn't listen to her then. But I kept the documents Diana sent me three years ago. I kept them locked in a safe deposit box at Grand Central."

Before Julian could respond, the monitors attached to the incubator began to shriek.

Red lights flashed across the control board. Hope’s tiny chest stopped moving.
