Chapter 8 - A Breath in the Dark

"Code blue! Neonatal ICU, incubator four!" a voice blared through the ward intercom.

The quiet room exploded into chaos. Nurses pushed Julian and Claire back as a team of pediatric intensivists swarmed the tiny incubator. Dr. Thorne was already there, sliding his hands through the portholes, his voice barking steady commands.

"Desaturating! Pulse ox dropping below forty! Bag her! Get the epinephrine, zero point zero one milligrams!"

Claire screamed, trying to launch herself out of the wheelchair, but Julian caught her, wrapping his arms securely around her chest, holding her back while tears streamed down his own face.

"No! Hope! Please, God, take me instead! Take me!" Claire wailed, her hands reaching through the air toward her dying child.

"Clear the airway! Increase oxygen flow to maximum!" Thorne ordered, compressing the infant's chest with two delicate fingers. One, two, three. Breathe. One, two, three. Breathe.

The flatline tone was unbearable—a continuous, shrill sound that seemed to tear through Julian's soul. He had fought boardrooms, cutthroat executives, and his own flesh and blood, but standing there watching his daughter slip away, he had never felt so utterly powerless.

"Come on, little girl," Dr. Thorne muttered under his breath, sweat dripping down his temple. "Fight. Come on."

Ten seconds. Twenty seconds. Thirty seconds.

The shrill tone broke.

Beep.

A pause.

Beep... beep... beep.

The oxygen saturation monitor flickered, climbing slowly: 55... 70... 88.

The baby took a ragged, spontaneous gasp.

"Sinus rhythm restored," a nurse exhaled, visibly trembling. "Vitals stabilizing. She's back with us."

Dr. Thorne stepped back from the incubator, pulling off his gloves, his hands visibly shaking. He turned to Julian and Claire, wiping his brow. "She suffered a bronchospasm. Her lungs are extremely underdeveloped. We got her back, but... she won't survive another episode like that. She needs a specialized pulmonary surfactant treatment, but the FDA approval is pending for infants under twenty-six weeks. The only hospital running the clinical trial is the Swiss Pediatric Institute in Zurich."

"Then we fly to Zurich," Julian said instantly, not hesitating for a fraction of a second.

"Julian, you can't," a cold, smooth voice spoke from the doorway.

Arthur Vance stood there, impeccably dressed in a charcoal pinstripe suit, holding an injunction order stamped with a red wax seal.

"Mr. Sterling, as the court-appointed temporary guardian of the Sterling Trust under Eleanor’s emergency motion, I have placed a medical travel restriction on the minor, Hope Sterling," Arthur said with a sickening smile. "Moving her out of state constitutes medical neglect. Any attempt to board a private jet will result in your immediate arrest."
