Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of Treason

Julian slowly let go of Claire’s wheelchair. He turned toward Arthur Vance, the air around him dropping several degrees.
"Arthur," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "You are standing between a father and his daughter's survival."
"I am merely upholding the fiduciary duty established by your late father, Julian," Arthur replied smoothly, tapping the court order against his open palm. "The child is a ward of the trust until legal paternity and succession are formalized. And given the suspicious circumstances surrounding the fall at the estate, Child Protective Services has opened an inquiry into both you and your wife."
Claire let out a ragged gasp of disbelief. "You framed us? You made it look like we abused our own child?"
"We simply submitted anonymous testimony from estate staff suggesting domestic instability," Arthur said, adjusting his spectacles. "It will take weeks for the courts to clear you. By then... well, nature may take its course with the poor infant. And the succession will pass seamlessly to Marcus and Eleanor."
Julian took three deliberate steps forward until he was standing chest-to-chest with the lawyer. "You think you're untouchable, Arthur. You think because you wrote the trust, you own it."
"I know the law, Julian. You are a passionate man, but passion loses in court."
"Then let's talk about Diana Cross," Julian whispered.
Arthur’s smug expression froze instantly. The color drained from his weathered cheeks. "What did you say?"
"Diana Cross. Apartment 4B, 114th Street, Chicago," Claire’s voice rang out from behind Julian, sharp and clear. "The woman who gave birth to your son eighteen years ago—the son your wife knows nothing about. The son whose private school tuition you paid out of Eleanor Sterling's embezzled offshore funds."
Arthur’s hands began to shake, the court order crumpling slightly in his grip. "That’s... that’s impossible. Diana would never talk to you."
"Diana died six months ago, Arthur," Claire said, rising slowly from her wheelchair, gripping the IV pole for support. She stood tall, looking down at the terrified lawyer. "She left everything to me. Every ledger, every wire transfer, every signed extortion letter you forced Eleanor to sign over the last decade. It’s all sitting in an encrypted vault."
Julian stepped closer, his shadow engulfing the smaller man. "Here is what is going to happen, Arthur. In five minutes, you are going to call the family court judge. You are going to withdraw the travel restriction. You are going to authorize the medical transport to Zurich. And then, you are going to sign an affidavit stating that Eleanor Sterling pushed my wife down the stairs."
"I... I can't do that," Arthur stammered, backing toward the corridor. "Eleanor will kill me! She has connections—"
"Eleanor is broke," Julian barked, slamming his hand against the doorframe right next to Arthur's head. "Her accounts are frozen. Her allies on the board abandoned her this morning. You have two choices: go down with her on federal racketeering and attempted murder charges, or sign the papers and walk away with your freedom."
Arthur stared into Julian’s dark, unyielding eyes. He looked at Claire, standing broken yet unbowed.
The lawyer reached into his breast pocket with trembling fingers, pulling out a gold fountain pen. "Give me the transfer papers. I'll sign."
Julian watched him sign the document against the wall, but before Arthur could hand it over, the hospital lights suddenly flickered and died.

The emergency backup generators sputtered, then fell silent.
The entire hospital plunged into pitch-black darkness.
