Chapter 2 - Code Red at St. Jude’s

The wail of the ambulance siren cut through the rainy afternoon like a razor. Julian sat in the narrow passenger space of the emergency vehicle, his knuckles bruised, holding Claire’s icy hand as the paramedics worked in feverish, hushed tones around her. Monitors beeped frantically, measuring the rapid, erratic heartbeat of an unborn child fighting for its life.
"Her vitals are dropping, blood pressure ninety over sixty," the female paramedic barked into her radio. "Prep OR Three! We have maternal trauma with signs of placental abruption. Patient is twenty-four weeks gestation."
Claire was drifting, her lips pale, her eyes rolling toward the roof of the ambulance. "Julian... don't leave me... don't let her near us..."
"I'm here, Claire. Look at me. Only at me," Julian begged, leaning down so his forehead touched hers. His pristine three-piece suit was stained with Claire’s blood, the crisp blue collar wrinkled and damp. "You fight. You fight for our daughter. Do you hear me? I will tear this world apart before I let anything happen to either of you."
When the doors slammed open at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, a swarm of green and blue scrubs rushed forward. Julian was pushed back by a wall of nurses as the gurney was propelled down the sterile, fluorescent-lit corridor toward the surgical wing.
"Sir, you cannot come beyond this point!" an orderly shouted, placing both hands against Julian's chest.
"That is my wife! That is my child!" Julian roared, a primal rage tearing out of his throat.
"And they need an operating room, not an audience! Sit down, Mr. Sterling, or security will escort you out!" the doctor commanded before disappearing behind the double swinging doors. The red light above the doorway clicked on: SURGERY IN PROGRESS.
Julian stood frozen in the center of the waiting area. The smell of antiseptic stung his nostrils. The cold linoleum beneath his dress shoes offered no comfort. He sank into a low plastic chair, burying his head in his bloodstained hands.
Footsteps clicked against the floor—sharp, measured, deliberate.
Julian looked up.
Eleanor walked down the corridor, wrapped in a black cashmere coat thrown hurriedly over her plum velvet gown. Beside her walked Arthur Vance, the Sterling family’s chief legal counsel, clutching a leather briefcase.
Eleanor stopped three paces away, her face composed into a mask of maternal concern, though her eyes remained entirely cold. "Julian, darling. Thank God you're unhurt. How is she? The doctors—"
Julian rose slowly to his feet. Standing at six-foot-two, his imposing frame towered over his mother. "Why did you do it?"
Eleanor sighed, shaking her head. "You're traumatized. Arthur is here to handle the police report. We’ll tell them she tripped on the stairs due to her slippers. The media cannot get wind of—"
"Shut up," Julian said.
Eleanor paused, stunned. "Excuse me?"
"You pushed her," Julian whispered, stepping into her space until Eleanor was forced to look directly into his wrath. "I saw her falling through the air, Mother. I saw you looking down. You tried to kill my child."
"Julian, think of the company! Think of your legacy!" Eleanor hissed, dropping her mask of elegance. "That girl is an opportunist from nowhere! She seduced you, trapped you with a bastard, and now she threatens everything we've built! I did what had to be done to protect your father's empire!"

Before Julian could strike the wall beside her, the double doors of the OR flew open. A surgeon emerged, his gloves dripping red, his face pale and exhausted.
"Mr. Sterling?" the doctor called out. "We had complications. You need to make a decision right now."
