Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silver

The heavy oak back door clicked shut, cutting off the warm glow of the kitchen. Outside, rain beat against the asphalt. Emma walked through the shadows of the backyard driveway, leaning against the cold fence with each contraction. Pain gripped her lower abdomen like iron bands. She reached the curb, clutching her duffel bag against her chest.
Across the street, a lone taxi sat idle under a flickering streetlight. Emma opened the door and collapsed into the damp backseat. The driver glanced into the rearview mirror, eyes widening at her strained face and cream dress soaked with cold rainwater.

Back inside the quiet house, David stood by the polished granite counter. The house felt strangely still. His phone chimed with emails and market alerts, yet his gaze remained pinned on the cold platinum band between his fingers. It was lighter than he remembered, almost weightless.
""She’s bluffing,"" he muttered, tossing the ring onto the money. It rolled off and hit the tile floor with a sharp ping.
He waited for her to storm back in. Minutes passed. Five, ten, twenty. Only the clock hummed. David walked toward the garage, expecting to see her waiting by his car. Her keys hung untouched on the wall rack. The front walkway was empty. When he stepped out into the rain, red taillights vanished around the distant corner.

A tight knot formed in his chest. He reached into his pocket and dialed her number. The phone rang in the hallway console table—she had left it behind. Beside the buzzing screen sat an open medical folder he had never noticed. David pulled it toward him under the hallway light, his eyes catching a stamped red label: High-Risk Delivery - Immediate Surgical Escalation Required.
David's breath froze as the paper trembled in his hand.
