Chapter 13 - Fragile Bridges

Winter turned to early spring. David continued his work at the shelter every Tuesday and Saturday. Emma’s bakery deliveries occurred on Tuesdays. They settled into an unspoken, distant rhythm. They exchanged short nods. Occasionally, David would unload her truck without a word, carry the crates to the kitchen, and return to his duties.

He never spoke to Lily, though the little girl often watched him with wide, curious eyes from the warmth of the cab. David kept a twenty-foot perimeter, respecting the sanctuary Emma had built.

One Tuesday in late April, Emma arrived alone. Her eyes were tired, dark circles bruised beneath them. When David took the bakery crates from her hands, he noticed the faint tremble in her fingers.

""Are you all right?"" he asked gently, breaking his rule of silence.

Emma leaned against the open tailgate, closing her eyes for a brief second. ""Lily has chronic asthma. The pollen season hit hard this week. We were in the urgent care clinic until four in the morning.""

David’s heart dropped. ""Is she breathing okay now?""

""The medication stabilized her, but the nebulizer machine broke down an hour ago. The replacement takes three days to ship to our small clinic.""

David didn't hesitate. ""My logistics firm manages medical supply chains out of Boston. We have an emergency depot in South Portland. I can have a pediatric respiratory unit delivered to your door in forty-five minutes.""

Emma looked up, her pride warring against her exhaustion and maternal fear. ""David, I don't want to owe you.""

""You will never owe me anything,"" David said, his voice hard and absolute. ""This is for Lily. Let me make one phone call. Please, Emma.""
