Chapter 9 - The Account Paid

Rain misted down over the quiet coastal harbor across from the hardware store. Lily sat in the passenger seat of an old blue pickup truck, happily coloring in a sketchpad with the window rolled down two inches. Emma stood beside the wooden bench, arms crossed over her chest.

David sat on the edge of the bench, unable to look her in the eyes for more than a second.

""I was a coward,"" David began, his voice breaking under the weight of five years of silence. ""I thought money meant protection. I thought giving you cash excused me from being a man. I left you on the floor when you needed a partner, and I have lived with that every breath of every day since.""

Emma looked out at the gray water of the harbor. ""You didn't just leave me to hurt, David. You abandoned our child before she took her first breath. You made me walk into surgery believing I was completely worthless.""

""You weren't,"" David pleaded, hot tears spilling over his cheeks. ""You were everything. I was blind. I ruined my career, I sold the house, I stripped away everything that made me that monster. But I know that doesn't change anything for you.""

He reached into his pocket with deliberate slowness. He pulled out a small velvet pouch and set it gently on the wooden slats between them.

Emma looked down at it. ""What is that?""

""The ring,"" David said. ""And the cash. I carried them every day to remind myself of what I threw away. It’s yours. Sell it, throw it in the ocean, do whatever brings you peace.""

Emma picked up the pouch, untied the string, and spilled the platinum ring into her palm. She held it up to the gray light.

""I don't need your guilt to validate my survival,"" she said quietly.

She walked to the edge of the harbor wall, drew back her arm, and hurled the ring into the churning dark water.
