Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Glass

David stood frozen before the surgeon.

""Are you the family?"" the doctor asked, voice flat.

""I’m David. Her husband.""

The doctor looked at him for a long, silent moment. ""Your wife suffered severe placental abruption. She lost a massive amount of blood on the table. The baby is stabilized in the NICU, but your wife went into cardiac arrest twice. We brought her back, but she is in a medically induced coma.""

David leaned back against the wall, knees buckling. The sterile air felt thin, suffocating. He followed the nurse toward the infant ward like a walking corpse. Behind the thick glass of the intensive care nursery, surrounded by wires and humming ventilators, lay a tiny girl. Barely four pounds. A plastic tag wrapped around her frail ankle read: Baby Girl Vance.

David pressed his palm against the glass. The infant’s chest rose and fell rapidly beneath blue warming lights. She had Emma’s delicate brow, but the eyes, cracked open in brief restless twitches, held his exact shape.

""Emma wanted you to have nothing to do with her,"" a voice spoke from the corner.

David turned. It was Clara, Emma's lifelong friend and attorney, standing with folded arms and red-rimmed eyes.

""She left you hours ago, David,"" Clara said quietly, her voice laced with venom. ""I drafted the paperwork weeks ago. She just wanted to see if you would look up from your screen when her life was falling apart. You proved her right.""

David took an aggressive step forward. ""She’s my wife! That’s my daughter!""

Clara pulled an envelope from her coat, thrusting it into his chest. ""Not anymore. Look inside. It was signed this afternoon.""
