Chapter 12 - A Shared Burden

David moved instinctively, catching the wooden crate before it crashed to the ground, taking the bulk of the weight onto his own arms while keeping a careful distance from her body. Their hands briefly touched the cold wood together.
""Got it,"" David grunted, steadying the load. ""Careful. The lot hasn't been salted yet.""
Emma stood back, catching her breath. For the first time in five years, she saw him act without self-interest, without an audience, without a transaction in mind.
""Thank you,"" she murmured.
""Where do you want these?"" he asked, not making demands, not lingering on her face.
""Kitchen annex. Second door on the left.""
David carried the heavy crate inside, set it on the prep table, and immediately walked back out to the supply van. He didn't linger to talk. He didn't use the moment as an opening. He simply went back to his work, hauling winter coats through the freezing drizzle.
Emma watched him through the truck’s side mirror as she warmed the engine. He worked methodically, carrying the heaviest burdens for the older volunteers, never once glancing back toward her vehicle.
Beside her, Lily poked her head up from the back seat, munching on a warm crust of bread. ""Mama, who is that man in the blue coat?""
Emma took a slow breath, looking at David’s broad, tired shoulders as he hoisted another container.
""His name is David, sweetie.""
""Is he a helper?"" the little girl asked innocently.

Emma hesitated, watching him set down a box to hold the shelter door open for an elderly woman.
""Yes,"" Emma said softly, shifting into reverse. ""Right now, he's a helper.""
