Chapter 11 - Boundaries of Grace

David pinned the crayon drawing above his small desk. It was the only decoration in his apartment. He did not seek them out. He did not drive down the coast searching for artisanal bakeries. He honored Emma's boundary with religious devotion.
Instead, he poured his time into voluntary logistics coordination for a regional foster care shelter in Portland. He carried heavy boxes, drove supply vans, and fixed broken furniture for families who had nothing. He worked until his hands were calloused and his back ached, seeking no recognition.
Two months later, David was unloading crates of winter coats outside the community shelter when an old blue pickup truck pulled into the parking lot.
Emma stepped out from the driver’s side, hauling two large cardboard boxes filled with fresh bread and pastries. She stopped dead when she saw David holding a stack of blankets.
David immediately stepped back toward the shelter doors. ""I'm working here,"" he said quickly, keeping his distance. ""I didn't know you delivered here. I’ll go inside so you can unload.""
""Wait,"" Emma called out, her voice cutting through the crisp winter wind.
David paused on the bottom step, looking over his shoulder.
Emma set her bakery boxes on the tailgate of her truck. She wiped a stray hair from her forehead, looking at him with measured curiosity. She noticed his worn canvas coat, his work gloves, and the clear exhaustion in his posture.
""You've been helping this shelter for a while?"" she asked.
May you like
""Six months,"" David answered quietly. ""They need hands.""
Emma walked over to the side of her truck and lifted a second crate of sourdough loaves. It was heavy, and her foot slipped slightly on a patch of black ice near the bumper.
