Chapter 10 - The Shadow of Lily

The splash of the ring was swallowed instantly by the tide. Emma turned back to him, wiping her wet palms on her coat.

""The ring is gone,"" she said. ""The debt is dead. Go live your life, David.""

She began walking toward her truck, but David stood up, his voice cracking with desperation. ""Lily. Is she happy?""

Emma stopped, her hand on the driver’s door handle. She looked back at him, her expression softening by an imperceptible fraction. ""She loves drawing. She loves the ocean. She is kind, brave, and safe. She has everything she needs.""

""Does she know anything about me?""

""She knows her father wasn't ready to be a father,"" Emma replied honestly. ""I never taught her to hate you. Hate takes up room in a house that should belong to joy.""

David swallowed hard, the truth cutting deeper than any insult. ""Can I... could I ever send support? Anonymously? Through Clara? For her college?""

""No,"" Emma said firmly. ""I run an artisanal bakery down the coast. We pay our own bills. We don't need your penance, David. If you truly want to be different, respect our peace.""

Emma opened the door and climbed into the truck. The engine turned over with a low rumble. Lily waved toward the hardware store window, not knowing the broken man standing in the rain was the ghost from her mother's past.

David stood motionless as the blue truck pulled away, watching the red taillights blur through the mist until they were gone. He walked back to his car, heart aching, yet feeling a strange, hollow sense of clarity. The debt was acknowledged.

Three days later, David received a sealed letter in his mailbox with no return address. Inside was a child’s crayon drawing of an oak tree beside the ocean, signed at the bottom in uneven letters: Lily.
