Chapter 1 - The Dust Settles

The sharp tang of exhaust fumes hung in the crisp afternoon air, mingling with the scent of manicured boxwoods. Claire stood entirely motionless on the porch of the four-thousand-square-foot estate she had spent twelve years renovating. Her fingers remained wrapped tightly around the textured handle of her black roller suitcase.
""This trip is for family, Claire.""
Her mother-in-law Eleanor’s voice still echoed off the flagstone pillars, sickly sweet and poisonous. Beside her, Mark hadn't even had the guts to look her in the eye, hiding cowardice behind designer aviators as the electric tailgate hummed shut. They were on their way to Nice and Monaco for three weeks. A luxury retreat paid for from an account Claire had poured her early-career tech equity into.
The deep rumble of Mark’s black Cayenne faded at the bend of the cul-de-sac.
Claire did not collapse. She did not throw her suitcase down the stone steps. The single tear that had escaped rolled down her cheek, turned cold against her jaw, and died. She wiped it away with the back of her wrist, her breathing slowing to a steady, controlled rhythm.
She stepped back inside, letting the heavy oak door seal shut behind her with a dull thud. The vast foyer was silent, cavernous, and utterly devoid of warmth. She pulled her phone from her trench coat pocket and unlocked it.
She didn't dial a crying girlfriend. She scrolled past family contacts and stopped at a private, encrypted entry: Elena Ruiz. Forensic accountant and corporate litigation attorney. A friend who had quietly told her three years ago at a dinner party, “If you ever wake up, call me first, before you file.”
Claire pressed call.
""Claire?"" Elena answered on the second ring, brisk and alert.
""They just drove to JFK,"" Claire said. Her voice was unrecognizable even to herself—stripped of any tremor, leveled into chilled steel. ""Mark and Eleanor. I have three weeks.""
""Are you safe?""
""I’m alone.""
May you like
Elena paused, the rustle of papers coming through the line. ""Then we don't mourn, Claire. We execute. Open your laptop. You have three hours before Mark’s offshore routing window closes for the day.""
Claire’s heart gave a single, violent thud against her ribs as she walked toward Mark’s locked study. She knew the passcode he thought she had never seen.
