Chapter 11 - The Confession Tape

Five thousand miles away, Claire sat in Elena’s high-rise Manhattan office. The room smelled of polished mahogany and espresso. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, rain began to patter against the glass, blurring the skyline.
Elena slipped a digital audio recorder onto the glass desk between them.
""This came in twenty minutes ago from the Nassau County District Attorney's office,"" Elena said. ""They picked up Sophia Vance at the gate. The moment they told her she was facing ten to fifteen years for wire fraud and conspiracy, she didn't even ask for a glass of water. She started singing.""
Elena pressed play.
Sophia’s voice echoed through the speaker, breathless, erratic, stripped of all the poise she had displayed on Claire’s lawn:
“It wasn't my plan! Eleanor came to me eight months ago! She said Mark had married a nobody who was sitting on fifteen million in tech stock and an unencumbered estate. Eleanor said Mark had already drained three million for his failed hedge fund trades and they needed to liquidate Claire’s entire trust before the annual tax audit in October! Mark set up the Nevis accounts... he forged her signature on the deed! I was just the broker... I swear to God, I was just handling the paper!”
Claire listened in complete silence. Her face was calm, her hands resting quietly in her lap.
For years, Mark had made her feel small. He had made her feel as though her career in software architecture had been a stroke of dumb luck, that without his financial guidance, she would squander her father’s legacy. Every family dinner had been a masterclass in subtle psychological degradation, with Eleanor casually critiquing her clothes, her taste, her inability to ""elevate"" Mark’s social circle.
They hadn't just looked down on her. They had treated her as prey.
""What happens to the house now?"" Claire asked quietly.
Elena smiled, a sharp, triumphant grin. ""The deed default has been formally vacated by court order. The property has been returned entirely to your sole name. The forged power of attorney is null and void.""
""And Mark’s personal accounts?""
""Frozen globally. But here’s the best part, Claire,"" Elena leaned forward. ""Because Mark transferred his personal assets into the joint marriage account earlier this year to hide them from corporate creditors, under New York domestic relations law, fifty percent of his remaining private equity shares are now legally under your temporary control.""

Claire looked up, her hazel eyes blazing. ""I want them all.""
""Then we book a flight to Nice,"" Elena said. ""Court hearings start Friday.""
