Chapter 14 - Signing Away the Name
The pen in Mark’s hand shook so violently that ink blotted against the first signature line.
""Mark, don't you dare!"" Eleanor cried out, lunging from the bed. ""If you sign that, we have nothing! No house, no trust, no social standing!""
""We already have nothing, Mother!"" Mark screamed back, his voice breaking into a pathetic sob. ""Can’t you see that? It’s over!""
He pressed the pen down. He signed the first document. Then the second. Then the waiver of all alimony, the deed quitclaim, and the surrender of corporate voting shares. Each stroke of the pen tore away another layer of the false empire he had spent his life pretending to build.
When the last page was turned, Mark dropped the pen onto the cheap wooden desk. He buried his face in his hands, his shoulders heaving with silent, helpless tears.
Claire picked up the documents, checked each signature with meticulous care, and handed them back to the process server.
""Thank you, gentlemen,"" she said in fluent French.
She turned toward the door.
""Claire!"" Mark called out, lifting his tear-streaked face. ""What are we supposed to do? How do we even get home? We don't have tickets!""
Claire stopped at the threshold. She paused, looking back over her shoulder at the man who had abandoned her on the pavement with a suitcase four days ago.
A cool, elegant smile touched her lips.
""I didn't want drama before I left,"" Claire said, repeating his exact words with razor-sharp perfection. ""Besides... there's no ticket for you.""
She walked out of the room, pulling the door shut behind her. The click of the latch echoed through the hallway like the drop of a guillotine.
Outside, the brilliant Mediterranean sun bathed the Promenade des Anglais. Claire walked toward a waiting black town car, breathing in the fresh, clean air of total freedom.

Her phone buzzed in her hand. It was a text from Elena: All domestic assets fully transferred to your private trust. Wire cleared.
Claire smiled and slid into the car. But as the driver pulled into traffic, her phone rang from a number she didn't recognize.
