Chapter 9 - The Riviera Wake-Up

It was 7:00 AM in the South of France.

The morning sun cast a glittering sheet of gold over the Mediterranean as Mark Sterling stepped onto the private balcony of his penthouse suite at the Hotel de Paris. He wore an ivory linen robe, holding a cup of espresso, savoring the cool, salted breeze.

For the first time in ten years, he felt entirely unburdened. Claire was gone—discarded on the driveway like luggage that had missed the flight. By now, Sophia would have secured the house, the escrow accounts would be unlocked, and the four-point-eight million wire would be resting comfortably in his numbered accounts.

Behind him, the gilded doors of the bedroom suite opened. Eleanor walked out, wrapped in silk, her silver hair neatly coiffed.

""Did you call the yacht broker in Antibes?"" Eleanor asked, taking a seat at the wrought-iron patio table. ""We should secure the catamaran before noon. The season fills up quickly.""

""I’m calling him as soon as the wire confirms at eight,"" Mark said with an easy grin. ""Everything is handled, Mother. Claire won't even have a lawyer hired until next week, and by then, every asset will be legally restructured under the Monaco trust.""

""Good,"" Eleanor sighed dismissively. ""She was always so exhausting. Always questioning expenses, always looking at the books. A real woman lets a man manage the family empire.""

Mark chuckled, setting his coffee cup down, and reached for his platinum corporate card to pay the concierge charges for their helicopter transfer. He pulled up his banking app on his iPhone to check the pending wire.

The screen loaded.

A red banner flashed across the top of the interface: ACCESS RESTRICTED. CONTACT COMPLIANCE.

Mark blinked. He tapped the screen again. The app immediately logged out.

""That’s odd,"" he muttered.

""What is it?"" Eleanor asked, pouring herself a glass of chilled orange juice.

""The app glitched. Just a server sync error."" Mark pulled out his second phone, the one linked directly to his private Swiss accounts.

When the page refreshed, the balance read: $0.00.

A cold drop of sweat formed at Mark’s hairline. Beneath the zero balance, a transaction notification appeared in French: Saisie Conservatoire Internationale — Interpol Central Bureau.

At that exact moment, a sharp knock sounded at the double doors of the penthouse suite.
