Chapter 8 - The Dominoes Fall

Elena Ruiz had not been idle. While Sophia was standing on the lawn pontificating, Elena had submitted three separate emergency filings to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and the Southern District of New York.

Every single domestic account associated with Vantage Crest Holdings had just been flagged with an anti-structuring freeze.

Sophia’s face drained of color as she scrolled through the notifications. The ivory coat seemed suddenly too heavy for her frame.

""What did you do?"" Sophia hissed into the intercom speaker.

""I didn't do anything,"" Claire replied, her voice cool and detached. ""You did. You wired funds from an offshore account flagged for Russian sanctions evasions into a domestic holding company to purchase secondary mortgage paper. Did you really think Mark’s shady Cayman intermediaries were clean? He bought those shelf corporations for pennies from disgraced hedge fund managers.""

""That’s impossible,"" Sophia muttered, her fingers trembling over the glass screen.

""Mark isn't a financial genius, Sophia. He’s an insecure con man who tells beautiful women what they want to hear,"" Claire said. ""He told me he loved me while taking my father’s money. He told his mother she was royalty while laundering dirty money through her name. And he told you that you were the architect of a brilliant takeover, when in reality, you just put your signature on twelve federal counts of wire fraud.""

Marcus, the private security leader, took a step back from the porch. He was an ex-detective; he knew when a scene had turned toxic. He looked at Sophia, shook his head, and began walking back to the van.

""Marcus, get back here!"" Sophia demanded, her voice losing its composure, cracking at the edges.

""Contract’s void, Ms. Vance,"" Marcus called back over his shoulder without stopping. ""The retainers just bounced. We’re leaving.""

The van engine roared to life. Within ten seconds, the red taillights vanished down Hillcrest Lane, leaving Sophia standing alone in the glow of the porch light, clutching her useless papers against the cold night wind.

Claire pressed the speaker button one last time. ""You have five minutes before the Nassau County patrol cars arrive to arrest you for criminal trespass, Sophia. I’d start running if I were you.""

Sophia stared at the camera with raw hatred, spun on her designer heels, and hurried toward the street.

Claire didn't celebrate. She turned back to the kitchen monitors. The domestic battle was won, but the real architects were still across the ocean.
