ONE DANCE TO CLAIM HER HEART / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Weight of Whispers

The mahogany floorboards of the grand ballroom vibrated faintly beneath Clara’s satin heels. Around her, laughter was sharp, polished, and cruel. Just ten feet away, Richard stood with his arm curled possessively around Evelyn’s waist, whispering into the hollow of her collarbone as if five years of marriage to Clara had never existed.

Clara kept her chin lifted, but her throat burned. Beside her, six-year-old Lily clutched her plush white rabbit against her velvet dress, her round brown eyes tracking the tension in the room.

"Mommy," Lily whispered, tugging Clara’s maroon gown. "Are people staring at us?"

"Just breathe, sweetheart," Clara murmured, brushing a soft strand of hair from Lily’s forehead. "Look at the flowers, not at them."

Then came the voice, deep and smooth like polished stone.

"Pretend you're my wife. Dance with me now."

Clara startled, her gaze snapping upward. Standing over their table was Julian Thorne. He was a myth in these circles—reclusive, razor-sharp, and unyielding. Dressed in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo with black satin lapels, Julian offered his hand with steady deliberation.

"Excuse me?" Clara gasped softly, her cheeks warming.

"Trust me for one dance," Julian said quietly, his gray eyes pinning hers with unyielding calm.

Before Clara could calculate the scandal, Lily chimed in. "He has nice shoes, Mommy. Go ahead."

A faint smirk softened Julian’s sculpted jaw. Clara looked toward Richard, whose gaze was already drifting toward them, a smirk of condescending pity forming on his lips. Anger replaced her shame. She slipped her trembling fingers into Julian’s warm, calloused palm.

Julian pulled her smoothly to her feet, guiding her effortlessly onto the center of the parquet floor as the orchestra swelled. As Clara fell into step against his chest, the entire room seemed to quiet.

"Why are you helping me?" Clara whispered, breathless from his sheer presence.

"Because he expected you to sit there broken," Julian murmured, his hand settling firm against the small of her back.

Across the room, Richard’s champagne glass froze halfway to his mouth, his confident expression shattering into pure shock. Clara felt a strange spark ignite in her chest—until Julian leaned down, his lips brushing near her ear.

"Keep smiling, Clara," Julian whispered. "Because before this song ends, your ex-husband is going to realize who actually bought out his entire firm this morning."
