Chapter 12 - Desperation’s Edge

Richard looked completely unhinged. His hair was plastered across his forehead in greasy strands, his tie undone, and his eyes bloodshot with frantic terror. Behind him stood three armed men in black tactical gear, their weapons aimed directly at Julian and Clara.

"Did you really think I wouldn't track the van?" Richard rasped, his voice trembling with manic fury. "My security team had a beacon on your vehicle from the moment you left the ballroom, Thorne."

Julian moved smoothly, stepping directly between Richard’s gun and Clara, shielding her with his body once more.

"You should have run for the border, Richard," Julian said, his tone deadly calm. "Coming here only guarantees you won't see daylight for the next twenty years."

"Shut up!" Richard screamed, waving the revolver wildly. "You think you're so superior, Thorne? Stealing my wife? Interfering in my deals?"

"I was never yours, Richard," Clara spoke up, stepping out from behind Julian’s shoulder, her voice clear and resonant in the cavernous room. "You were an empty shell who stole my father’s work because you lacked the talent to create anything of your own."

Richard’s face contorted in humiliation and rage. "Your father was an arrogant old fool! He looked down on me from the day we met. He knew I would take everything he spent his miserable life building!"

"And yet, you couldn't even unlock the final encryption," Julian remarked coldly. "Look at the screen, Sterling. You're already finished. The federal trade commission has already flagged your shell companies. Vane Holdings won't pay you; they'll hunt you down for taking their deposit under false pretenses."

Richard glanced nervously at the auxiliary monitors, his chest heaving as the reality of his impending ruin closed around him like a noose. His eyes flicked to the couch where Lily was beginning to stir, frightened by the shouting.

"Daddy?" Lily cried, her small voice cutting through the tension.

Richard didn't even look at her with affection. Instead, his gaze darkened with desperate, monstrous calculation. He stepped toward the child, leveling his gun directly at his own daughter.

"Step away from that console, Clara," Richard snarled, his finger whitening on the trigger. "Transfer the patents to my overseas account, or the girl doesn't leave this room."

Clara’s world stopped. A primal terror seized her soul. "Richard, no! She's your daughter!"

"She's leverage!" Richard yelled. "Now enter the code!"

Julian didn't hesitate. Before Clara could scream, he launched himself forward with blinding speed, throwing his entire body directly into the path of Richard’s weapon.

A gunshot cracked through the laboratory, deafening and brutal.
