ONE DANCE TO CLAIM HER HEART / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Highway Pursuit

The headlights behind them surged forward, weaving aggressively through the sparse midnight traffic. Julian’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, his knuckles turning pale beneath the dashboard lights.

"Clara, get in the back with Lily," Julian commanded, his voice dead calm despite the approaching danger. "Fasten the floor harnesses and stay below the window line."

Clara didn't hesitate. She scrambled into the rear cabin, wrapping her body protectively around Lily and locking their harnesses into the reinforced anchor points on the chassis.

"Mommy?" Lily whimpered, trembling beneath the blanket.

"Close your eyes, darling," Clara murmured against her ear. "Think about the waltz. Think about dancing."

A deafening crack shattered the rear window of the van, spider-webbing the reinforced safety glass. One of the pursuing SUVs—a heavy, blacked-out truck with an iron grille—slammed into their rear bumper, sending the van fishtailing violently across the wet asphalt.

Julian fought the wheel, his movements precise and instinctive. He feathered the throttle, letting the heavy van correct its slide before shifting into a lower gear and hammering the accelerator. The customized engine roared, pulling them ahead by a few precious yards.

"Hold on!" Julian yelled.

The highway split into a double-deck overpass leading toward the industrial docks of North Haven. The lead chasing vehicle pulled up alongside the van, its tinted window rolling down to reveal the barrel of an automatic weapon.

Clara held her breath, shielding Lily with her entire frame.

Instead of swerving away, Julian wrenched the wheel directly toward the attacker. The reinforced frame of the van slammed violently into the side of the SUV, grinding metal against metal in a cascade of blinding yellow sparks. The sudden impact threw the shooter off balance, sending his spray of bullets harmlessly into the concrete barrier.

Julian braked hard, letting the SUV overshoot them, then rammed the rear quarter of their vehicle with devastating force—a textbook PIT maneuver. The attacking SUV spun out of control, flipping across two lanes of traffic before crashing violently into an abandoned highway toll booth, bursting into flames.

"One down," Julian muttered under his breath.

But two more sets of headlights were already closing in, their engines screaming as they crested the rise of the bridge. Ahead lay the rusted iron skeleton of the North Haven industrial district, sprawling beside the black, turbulent waters of the bay.

"Julian, the bridge is out ahead!" Clara screamed, catching sight of the orange detour signs barricading the road. "It's closed for construction!"

Julian looked at the barricades, then checked his mirrors. The remaining two pursuit trucks were boxing them in from behind, leaving no room to turn around.

"Hang on to her, Clara," Julian said, his voice dropping into that chilling, unshakeable calm.

"Julian, no!"

Instead of slowing down, Julian slammed the gas pedal to the floor, aiming the van straight for the wooden barricades and the drop beyond.
