Chapter 5 - Debt of Honor

The black sedan cut through the slick, rain-drenched avenues with silent precision. Inside the leather interior, the only sound was Lily’s soft, rhythmic breathing as exhaustion finally overcame her, her head resting heavily against Clara’s lap. Clara stroked her daughter’s hair, her mind reeling from Julian’s revelation.
"My father?" Clara’s voice was barely louder than the hum of the tires. "Arthur Hayes gave you a scholarship?"
Julian nodded, watching the streetlights bleed across the glass. "The Hayes Foundation grant for mechanical engineering. I had no family, no collateral, and three rejections from top universities. Your father interviewed me himself. He told me that brilliant minds shouldn't starve in the shadows of arrogant men."
Clara felt a profound ache in her chest. Her father had passed away four years ago, shortly before Richard began systematically stripping away her influence in the company. Arthur Hayes had always distrusted Richard, calling him a hollow man with borrowed ambition. Clara had been too blind, too infatuated to see the truth until it was far too late.
"He never mentioned your name," Clara whispered.
"I asked him not to," Julian replied softly. "I wanted to prove the investment was warranted on my own terms. By the time I built Thorne Industries into something worthy of his notice, he was gone. And you were married to Sterling."
"And you stayed away."
"It wasn't my place to interfere in a marriage," Julian said, his jaw tightening slightly. "Until three weeks ago, when my legal team informed me that Sterling Enterprises was filing for bankruptcy protection while Richard liquidated millions into off-shore accounts. He stripped you bare, Clara. He left you with a modest settlement while planning to sell your father’s legacy to overseas venture capitalists."
Tears pricked behind Clara’s eyelids, hot and furious. "The software... the green energy grid algorithm... that was my father's concept. I spent five years refining the mathematics."
"I know," Julian said gently. "Which is why I acquired the controlling debt. He owes Thorne Industries ninety-two million dollars as of midnight. But the police he called tonight aren't a minor annoyance. Richard is desperate. Desperate men fabricate evidence."
The car swept down a private underground ramp, coming to a halt before a private elevator foyer marked with biometric scanners. Julian stepped out first, offering his hand to help Clara, then carefully lifted the sleeping Lily into his arms once again.
They rode the glass lift up seventy floors to Julian’s penthouse. The doors slid open to reveal an expanse of glass overlooking the glittering city, minimalist yet warm, with towering bookshelves and plush, dark furnishings.
"Make yourself at home," Julian said, carrying Lily down a short hallway and placing her gently onto a king-sized bed in a warm guest suite, pulling a cashmere throw over her small frame.
When Julian returned to the living area, Clara stood by the panoramic window, her reflection pale against the dark glass.
"What happens now?" she asked, turning to face him.
"Now, we build your defense before morning," Julian said, unbuttoning his tuxedo cuffs and rolling up his white sleeves. "I need your notebooks, Clara. Where are they?"
Clara felt a sudden drop in her stomach. "They're in a locked fireproof safe under the floorboards of my old apartment."

Julian stopped, his eyes fixing on her with sudden intensity. "Does Richard have the key?"
"No," Clara whispered, her pulse spiking. "But his younger brother runs the property management company for that building."
