ONE DANCE TO CLAIM HER HEART / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - The Scent of Scandal

The floor beneath them seemed to melt away as the violin notes spiraled toward the gilded ceiling. Julian turned Clara with fluid grace, his frame shielding her from the room’s biting scrutiny. Every movement was calculated, yet his touch remained reverent, never crossing the boundary of polite restraint.

"You bought his firm?" Clara asked, her voice trembling beneath the swell of the waltz.

"I purchased sixty percent of the controlling shares at eight o'clock yesterday evening," Julian answered without missing a beat. "It was strictly business until I walked into this hall and saw the coward gloating over the woman who built him."

Clara swallowed the knot in her throat. She had poured her inheritance, her late nights, and her dignity into Richard’s venture, only for him to hand her divorce papers the moment the company went public. To watch him now, frozen like a statue beside Evelyn, was an intoxicating reversal of fortunes.

"He won't let this go," Clara warned quietly. "Richard operates in spite. If he realizes we’re connected, he’ll try to destroy anything associated with you."

"He can try," Julian said, his eyes darkening with cold amusement. "A man who abandons his family to validate his ego rarely possesses the intelligence to outmaneuver an empire."

The music slowed to its final, lingering cadence. Julian brought her to an immaculate halt, stepping back just enough to offer a classic, respectful bow before resting his hand lightly on the crook of her elbow.

Around them, applause erupted—hesitant at first, then rolling into a deafening wave. Clara looked past Julian’s shoulder. Evelyn was whispering frantically into Richard’s ear, her face pale, while Richard set his champagne flute down with enough force to threaten the stemware.

Julian escorted Clara back to the table where Lily sat swinging her polished Mary Janes. The little girl gave Julian a wide, approving grin.

"You dance better than Daddy," Lily announced candidly.

Clara flushed. "Lily, hush."

"Honesty is a rare trait in this room, little one," Julian said, offering Lily an amused nod before turning back to Clara. "My driver is outside. You and Lily should not stay for the dessert."

"Julian, wait," Clara began, but before she could thank him, a sharp voice sliced through the air behind them.

"Thorne! What the hell is the meaning of this?"

Clara turned to find Richard standing three paces away, his face mottled with crimson rage, his eyes darting between Julian and his ex-wife.
