Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The silence that followed the blackout was suffocating. High above the city, the only light came from the muted glow of distant skyscrapers filtering through the rain-streaked windows.
"Stay down," Julian whispered, his hand instantly finding Clara's arm, pressing her low behind the heavy mahogany desk.
Clara’s heart hammered violently against her ribs. "Lily," she gasped, panic constricting her throat. "She's in the other room!"
"I have private security stationed in the hallway outside her door," Julian whispered back, his voice impossibly calm, though his breathing was controlled and deliberate. "The penthouse has dedicated auxiliary generators. If the power cut out entirely, it wasn't a grid failure. The main feed was manually severed from inside the building."
A soft, metallic click echoed from the far end of the foyer. The elevator shouldn't have been able to operate without power, which meant someone had bypassed the electronic lock on the emergency stairwell door.
Clara felt Julian shift beside her. In the darkness, she saw the silhouette of his arm reach into a concealed compartment beneath the desk frame. When he drew back, he held a sleek, matte-black handgun.
"Do you know how to shoot?" Julian asked, his voice a low hum against her ear.
"No," she breathed, her fingers trembling against his wrist.
"Stay behind me. If anyone comes through that door who isn't wearing a gray lapel pin, you run through the adjoining balcony to the service stairs. Do not look back."
"I'm not leaving Lily," Clara said, her voice shaking but fierce.
Julian paused for a fraction of a second, his gaze meeting hers through the dim light. "Good. We protect her together."
Footsteps, muffled and cautious, crept across the hardwood floor of the main gallery. Clara could hear the faint rustle of tactical gear. Whoever had breached the building weren't standard beat cops; they were professionals.
Suddenly, a red laser sight swept across the far wall, dancing over the artwork before hovering dangerously near the edge of the study doorframe.
Julian didn't wait. He rose with lethal speed, firing two suppressed shots through the drywall. A sharp grunt followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor echoed in the corridor.
"Move!" Julian commanded, grabbing Clara's hand and pulling her toward the connecting suite.
They slipped through the darkness, reaching the guest bedroom just as a flashlight beam swept through the living room behind them. Julian locked the heavy oak door and slid a deadbolt into place.
On the bed, Lily was sitting up, rubbing her eyes, clutching her plush bunny against her chest. "Mommy? Why is it so dark?"
"Shh, baby, it's okay," Clara whispered, rushing to the bed and scooping Lily into her arms.
Julian moved to the bedside console, tapping a hidden numeric pad. A section of the wood-paneled wall clicked open, revealing a tight, vertical shaft with a steel ladder descending into darkness.
"An internal maintenance hoist," Julian said quickly. "It leads directly to the sub-basement garage. Clara, go first. Take Lily."
"What about you?" she asked, clutching her daughter tight.

"I need to wipe the terminal in the study," Julian said, his expression grim. "If they download the server IP for the foundry, we lose everything."
Before Clara could argue, a violent impact rattled the bedroom door, cracking the wood around the frame.
