Chapter 13 - Blood and Steel

The bullet slammed into Julian’s shoulder, spinning him sideways, but his momentum drove him hard into Richard. Both men crashed onto the concrete floor in a tangle of limbs and fury.

"Julian!" Clara screamed.

The three tactical mercenaries raised their rifles, but Julian’s preparation had anticipated even this. As he hit the floor, his foot kicked out against the emergency lever beneath the console.

Instant halogen blinding flares burst from the ceiling tiles, accompanied by a high-frequency acoustic alarm designed to incapacitate intruders. The three mercenaries cried out, dropping their weapons to clutch their ears, blinded and disoriented by the sensory assault.

Richard scrambled on the floor, clawing for his dropped revolver. Clara acted on pure instinct. She grabbed a heavy steel fire extinguisher mounted to the console pillar and swung it with all her strength, striking Richard across the forearm.

The bone cracked with a sickening snap. Richard howled in agony, collapsing onto his back, clutching his broken arm against his chest.

Julian pushed himself up from the floor, his face pale, crimson spreading rapidly across the dark fabric of his ruined tuxedo. Yet his expression remained cold, detached, and utterly lethal. He retrieved Richard’s fallen revolver, aiming it directly between Richard’s eyes.

"Don't... please, Thorne..." Richard whimpered, cowering against the base of the server rack, crying like a child. "I was desperate. You don't know what Vane Holdings will do to me!"

"I don't care," Julian said, his voice dropping into a whisper that chilled the room.

"Julian, stop!" Clara rushed forward, placing her hand gently over his trembling gun arm. "Don't ruin your life for him. Look at him. He's already destroyed."

Julian breathed heavily, his jaw working as he looked into Clara’s pleading eyes. Slowly, deliberately, he lowered the hammer of the gun and stepped back.

Sirens wailed in the distance, echoing through the subterranean railway tunnel. Red and blue lights flashed against the reinforced concrete walls as tactical units of the state police and federal marshals swept into the chamber, their weapons drawn, led by Julian’s head of security, Marcus.

"Hands in the air! Nobody move!" the lead officer bellowed.

Richard slumped against the steel floor, sobbing in defeated silence as federal agents pinned him down and snapped zip-ties around his wrists.

Marcus rushed straight to Julian. "Sir! The medical transport is standing by outside."

Julian waved him off, keeping his eyes solely on Clara. "Clara first. Ensure she executes the master sequence."

Clara turned to the console. With steady fingers, she typed in her father’s final authorization phrase: A legacy built on truth.
