Chapter 13 - The New Morning

The flashbulbs of hundreds of journalists lit up the marble steps of the federal courthouse three hours later. The news of Victoria Vance's arrest had sent shockwaves through the international financial markets, triggering a swift and total collapse of her personal inner circle.
Elena stood beneath the massive stone columns, wrapped in a warm wool coat Conan had bought for her from a small boutique near the harbor. In her arms, Leo was awake, blinking peacefully at the brilliant blue sky.
Beside her, Sarah Mercer was finishing an interview with a cluster of reporters.
""The court has confirmed that the entirety of the Vance Shipping estate will be placed into an irrevocable trust for Julian's grandson, Leo Vance,"" Sarah announced firmly into a sea of microphones. ""Conan Vance will serve as the trustee and legal guardian until the child reaches majority. There will be no further comments today.""
Sarah turned and walked back to where Conan and Elena were waiting near an unmarked sedan.
""It’s done,"" Sarah said, handing Conan a thick folder containing the sealed court decrees. ""The district attorney has already denied bail. Victoria will be transferred to a maximum-security remand facility this afternoon. Miller has agreed to testify in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table.""
Elena took a deep, trembling breath, the tension that had gripped her body for months finally melting away. ""Is it really over, Sarah? Can she still hurt us through her contacts?""
""Her contacts are busy shredding documents and hiring criminal defense attorneys for themselves,"" Sarah said with a faint, satisfied smile. ""Victoria Vance is toxic. No one in this city will take her phone calls ever again. You’re free, Elena.""
Sarah reached out, gently touching Leo’s cheek, before turning to Conan. ""Your brother would have been proud of the way you fought for them, Conan. Take good care of them.""
""I will,"" Conan replied, nodding with deep respect.
They watched as Sarah walked down the steps, disappearing into the crowd of lawyers and court clerks. Conan turned to Elena. For the first time in what felt like an eternity, the shadows under her eyes were softened by genuine relief. The purple bruise on her cheek was still tender, but her spirit was no longer broken.
""Where do we go now, Conan?"" Elena asked softly, looking out over the harbor where massive cargo ships glided through the sparkling blue water. ""The Vance estate... I never want to set foot in that house again.""
""Neither do I,"" Conan said, taking her hand gently in his. ""We leave the city. We have a small farm out in the Berkshires that belonged to Gabriel and me when we were boys. It’s quiet. There are no gates, no ballrooms, and no cameras.""

Elena looked up at him, her hazel eyes glistening with fresh tears—not of fear, but of profound gratitude. ""Will you stay with us?""
Conan looked at the sleeping baby, then into Elena’s eyes. ""I promised Gabriel I’d never leave your side. I intend to keep that promise.""
