Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The harsh blue glare of the laptop screen illuminated the dark wood of the cabin, casting long, wavering shadows against the walls. Elena limped over, leaning heavily against Conan’s shoulder as the silent footage played out before them.

On the screen, Officer Miller—the very man who had stood between them and Victoria half an hour earlier—handed the glass to the frail patriarch. Julian drank it without suspicion. Within seconds, the old man began clutching his throat, his chest heaving until he fell limp against the satin pillows.

Miller calmly took the glass back, wiped the rim with a handkerchief, and pocketed a small amber vial from the nightstand before slipping out the balcony doors.

""My God,"" Elena gasped, pressing her hand over her mouth to stifle a scream. ""Miller wasn't helping us escape. He was her executioner.""

Conan stared at the monitor, his jaw muscles twitching with cold fury. ""He didn't come to the mansion to rescue you. He came to see if Victoria had found Julian’s papers. When he saw me step in, he played the righteous cop to get us out of the house where he could arrange an 'accident' cleanly on the road.""

""The black SUV..."" Elena whispered, the horror dawning on her. ""That wasn't Victoria's private security. That was Miller’s men.""

""And when that failed, he made the call about the Amber Alert,"" Conan said, piecing together the web of betrayal. ""He’s using the full authority of the state police to corner us. If we get pulled over, we won't be arrested. We’ll be shot for 'resisting,' and Leo will vanish back into the Vance trust fund where Victoria can control his inheritance through a proxy.""

Suddenly, the burner phone on the table vibrated again.

Conan stared at the screen. The caller ID was identical to the previous mystery caller. He picked it up and hit speaker, placing it carefully on the desk.

""You took the logging road,"" the caller’s voice came through, steady and sharp. ""Good. You’re smarter than your brother was.""

""Who are you?"" Conan demanded, his voice low and dangerous. ""And how do you know what Miller did?""

A dry chuckle sounded over the line. ""I’m Julian Vance’s personal attorney, Sarah Mercer. I drew up the second will. The one Victoria doesn't know exists. The one where Julian transferred fifty-one percent of Vance Maritime into a trust specifically designated for Leo Vance, with Conan Vance named as sole legal guardian.""

Conan exchanged a swift, stunned look with Elena. ""Why didn't you go to the federal authorities?""

""Because Victoria owns the federal judges in this district,"" Sarah replied sharply. ""The only court that can hear this without being bought is the maritime probate registry in Boston. If you can get that drive and Leo's birth certificate to the federal courthouse before 9:00 AM tomorrow, the trust locks automatically. Victoria loses everything: the fortune, the legal shield, and her control over the police department.""

""Boston is three hundred miles away,"" Conan said, glancing at the rain drumming furiously against the cabin roof. ""Every highway will be crawled with state troopers in twenty minutes.""

May you like

""Then you’d better start moving through the woods,"" Sarah said. ""Because Miller just pinged your phone's tower. They're already coming up the ridge.""

Outside, a faint crunch of tires on wet gravel cut through the storm.
