Chapter 2 - The Secret in the Silk

The windshield wipers beat a rhythmic, hypnotic tempo against the glass as Conan steered the car down the winding mountain pass. The taillights of the estate faded behind the thick mist, but the suffocating weight of the Vance family followed them like an invisible exhaust.
""What is it, Elena?"" Conan asked, keeping his eyes on the slick asphalt while adjusting the heater to warm the shivering infant.
Elena’s fingers trembled as she held the envelope up to the dim dashboard light. The wax seal was unbroken, stamped with a silver serpent coiling around a key—the private seal of Julian Vance, Victoria’s late father-in-law who had mysteriously died eight months ago.
""Before... before she dragged me down to the kitchen,"" Elena whispered, her teeth still chattering, ""I was ordered to clean out Julian’s private study on the third floor. Victoria said she wanted every scrap of his personal effects boxed for incineration. She went into a rage when she caught me near the wall safe.""
Conan’s knuckles whitened against the steering wheel. ""She struck you because of this?""
""She accused me of stealing,"" Elena said, a tear tracing the contour of the purpling bruise on her cheek. ""I didn't steal it, Conan. When Leo began crying in the crib near the window, the floorboards gave way slightly beneath the bookshelf. The envelope slipped out from the hollow baseboard. I tucked it into his wrap without thinking, just trying to get him out of the room before Victoria came in.""
""Open it,"" Conan said quietly.
With shaking fingers, Elena cracked the brittle red wax. Inside lay a single folded parchment and a small, heavy titanium flash drive. She unfolded the paper, leaning close to read the handwritten scrawl by the dim interior light.
""It’s a sworn testament,"" Elena breathed, her eyes widening as she scanned the lines. ""Julian... he knew he was being poisoned. He names Victoria. But Conan... look at the second paragraph.""
She leaned forward between the front bucket seats, holding the paper where Conan could glance at it during a stretch of straight highway. His eyes darted down for a fraction of a second, reading the jagged, dying handwriting of the old tycoon:
I leave everything not to my son’s widow, whose heart is hollow stone, but to the bloodline she sought to erase. Leo is not an orphan of fortune; he is the true heir to the Vance shipping empire. Guard him, Conan, for your brother died trying to bring him to light.
A chill colder than the mountain rain seized Conan's spine. His older brother, Gabriel, had died in an unsolved hit-and-run six months ago—a tragedy the family had brushed aside as reckless driving.

""She didn't just want to humble you in that kitchen, Elena,"" Conan whispered, his voice dangerously low. ""She knows who Leo really is. And she killed Gabriel to hide it.""
Before Elena could speak, the rear window suddenly lit up with piercing white high beams. A heavy black SUV surged out of the dark hairpin turn behind them, accelerating directly toward their rear bumper.
