Chapter 14 - The Quiet Haven

Two weeks later, the autumn leaves in the Berkshire mountains had turned a brilliant canopy of scarlet, amber, and gold. The air was crisp, smelling of fallen leaves, woodsmoke, and damp earth.

Elena stood on the wide wooden porch of the two-story farmhouse, holding a warm mug of chamomile tea. Leo was resting nearby in a hand-crafted cedar bassinet, bundled in a soft flannel blanket that Conan had carved for him during the quiet evenings.

Down in the gravel driveway, Conan was finishing repairs on an old pickup truck, his hands covered in grease as he tightened a bolt on the engine block. He wore a simple gray henley and worn denim, looking completely detached from the billion-dollar boardrooms and flashing emergency lights of two weeks ago.

Watching him work, Elena felt an overwhelming sense of peace settle into her bones. The bruised skin on her forehead had healed to a faint, pale mark, and her twisted ankle had regained its strength.

Every night since they arrived, Conan had slept on the downstairs sofa, keeping watch over the doors with quiet, unspoken devotion. He never pushed her, never demanded answers about the painful months she had spent trapped under Victoria’s roof, and never treated Leo as anything less than his own blood.

Conan wiped his hands on a shop rag, slammed the hood shut, and looked up at the porch. Seeing Elena watching him, a rare, genuine smile touched the corners of his lips. He walked up the wooden steps, pulling off his work gloves.

""Engine's running smooth,"" he said, leaning against the timber railing. ""We can take the truck into town tomorrow to pick up supplies for the winter.""

""You don't have to spend every waking hour fixing things for us, Conan,"" Elena said softly, stepping closer to him. ""You’ve already saved our lives.""

""Fixing things keeps my hands busy,"" Conan murmured, his gaze resting on her face. ""And watching you two smile makes this house feel alive again. Gabriel always wanted this place filled with laughter.""

Elena set her mug down on the porch table and reached out, gently placing her hand over Conan’s rough, calloused fingers. Conan went still, his eyes meeting hers.

""He loved you so much, Conan,"" Elena whispered. ""He used to tell me stories about how you two would build rafts on the river down below. He always said that if the world ever fell apart, you were the only man who could put it back together.""

Conan swallowed, an unfamiliar warmth rising in his chest. For years, he had lived as a lone soldier, moving from one conflict to the next, convinced that his only purpose was to absorb the violence of the world so others wouldn't have to. But standing here, with Elena’s hand warm against his, he realized that surviving was only the first step.

Living was the real victory.

He turned his palm, intertwining his fingers with hers. ""We're going to build a good life here, Elena. Together.""

Before Elena could answer, the home's landline phone—an unlisted, private connection installed by Sarah Mercer—began ringing from inside the hallway.

Conan frowned slightly, stepping inside to answer it. ""Conan Vance.""

""Conan,"" Sarah Mercer’s voice came over the receiver, but this time, the attorney's tone was tight, stripped of its usual composed authority. ""I need you to listen to me very carefully.""
