Chapter 8 - The Red Barn

Elena’s boots squelched in the thick mud as she dragged herself through the overgrown pasture. Her twisted ankle throbbed with white-hot agony with every step, but she kept her arms locked tight around Leo, shielding him from the freezing drizzle with the flap of her tattered purple dress.

Up ahead, the outline of the abandoned red barn loomed against the gray pre-dawn sky like a sleeping giant. The roof was rusted and sagged in the middle, but the double sliding doors were shut against the wind.

Elena reached the small side door, threw her weight against it, and slipped inside, collapsing against a stack of dry hay bales. Leo stirred, letting out a small, hungry whimper.

""Shh, my sweet boy... shh,"" Elena whispered, tears stinging her eyes as she gently rocked him in the pitch black. Her body burned with fever and exhaustion. Her head pounded from the blow Victoria had dealt her in the mansion’s kitchen.

She looked down at her baby's tiny, perfect face in the pale moonlight filtering through the gaps in the timber walls. ""Your father died to keep us safe, Leo,"" she whispered softly, brushing a strand of dark hair from his forehead. ""And Conan won't let them take you. I promise.""

Suddenly, the side door creaked open.

Elena gasped, scrambling backward into the hay, her hand searching wildly for any weapon—a pitchfork, an old iron pipe, anything. Her fingers closed around a rusted iron horseshoe half-buried in the straw.

A tall figure stepped through the threshold, silhouetted against the morning fog.

""Elena?""

The horseshoe dropped from her hand as relief flooded her chest so violently she could barely breathe. ""Conan!""

Conan crossed the barn floor in long strides, dropping to his knees beside her. He looked bruised, mud caked across his maroon shirt and leather jacket, but his eyes were blazing with ferocious determination. He immediately pulled both of them into his arms, checking Leo’s warmth with the back of his hand.

""Are you hurt?"" he asked, his voice rough.

""Just my ankle,"" Elena breathed, burying her face into the damp collar of his jacket. ""You made it. I thought... I heard gunfire up on the ridge.""

""We don't have much time,"" Conan said, pulling her gently to her feet while supporting her weight on his shoulder. ""I took a deputy's patrol vehicle. It has a high-grade scrambler and emergency lights. We can blow through the county perimeter before they realize Davis is down.""

""And Miller?""

""He's closing the northern highways,"" Conan said, leading her toward the rear barn doors where the white and blue SUV sat idling silently in the shadows. ""He thinks we're heading toward Canada. He doesn't know we're going straight to Boston.""

As Conan helped Elena into the front passenger seat, the cruiser's dashboard radio crackled with static. A sharp, icy voice broke through the channel—not a police dispatcher, but Victoria Vance herself.

""Officer Miller, report,"" Victoria’s aristocratic voice purred over the tactical band. ""The media has picked up the Amber Alert. I want the girl silenced before the noon press conference. And Miller... do not bring the child back alive.""
