Chapter 3 - Confrontation at Midnight**

The tension in the room thickened until it was almost suffocating. The hum of the heart monitor felt like a ticking time bomb. Arthur did not back down. He stood his ground, towering over the bed, his presence commanding despite being heavily outnumbered.
"Victoria," Arthur said coldly, his voice steady. "I see you're still doing the syndicate's dirty work under the guise of a badge."
Agent Vance took two steps forward, her polished shoes clicking against the floor. The two troopers remained by the doorway, their expressions stoic, eyes locked on Arthur’s every micro-movement. "Don't lecture me about morality, Arthur. You stole classification files ten years ago and vanished. And now, you've dragged an innocent girl into your crusade."
"Innocent?" Arthur let out a harsh, low laugh. "She's the daughter of Julian Vance—your late brother. The man your superiors murdered because he refused to lie for them!"
Clara’s breath hitched. She looked between Arthur and the woman in the black suit. "Aunt... Victoria?" she whispered, her voice trembling with confusion and newfound terror.
Agent Vance’s cold facade cracked for a fraction of a second. Her eyes flicked toward Clara, a sudden wave of unspoken guilt passing over her face before she quickly masked it behind authority. "Clara, stay quiet. You don't understand the full picture. What your father was involved in was bigger than all of us. I am here to secure you... and the drive."
"She stays with me," Arthur declared, taking a slow step toward Victoria. "You sold your soul to protect your career, Victoria. I promised Julian I would protect his family. You will have to kill me in this hospital room before I let you hand her over to the council."
"Is that a threat, Arthur?" Vance asked, raising her hand slightly—a sign for the officers behind her to prepare their weapons.
"It's a promise," Arthur replied smoothly.
Dr. Rose stepped between them, her hands raised in protest. "Stop it! Both of you! This is a hospital! She is a trauma patient who just underwent emergency surgery. If you stress her system any further, she will go into cardiac arrest!"

For a moment, silence descended on the room. Victoria glared at Arthur, analyzing her options. Shooting a decorated former agent in front of hospital staff would create a public nightmare. She needed the silver locket around Clara's neck—the physical key containing the decrypted evidence of decades of institutional corruption.
