Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Machine**

Arthur inserted the micro flash drive into the laptop’s USB port. The screen flickered to life, lines of complex blue code cascading rapidly down the display as the decryption protocols activated.

"Accessing encrypted partition..." a automated voice whispered from the speaker.

Arthur’s fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing secondary firewall prompts. As the files opened, document after document materialized on the screen: bank transactions, wiretap logs, photos of clandestine meetings, and casualty reports that had been classified as accidental deaths.

Clara walked over slowly, standing beside Arthur, staring at the screen. Suddenly, a video file tagged with her father's name appeared at the top of the directory.

"Julian_Vance_Statement.mp4," Arthur read aloud softly.

He clicked on the file. The screen glitched for a second before revealing the face of a middle-aged man with kind, tired eyes and grey-ing hair. It was Julian Vance. Clara gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as tears instantly welled in her eyes.

"If you are watching this," Julian's voice echoed through the quiet cabin, recorded years prior, "it means I am already dead, and my daughter Clara is in grave danger. To whoever holds this drive, know that the evidence contained here details Operation Iron Curtain—a conspiracy that reaches into the highest halls of power."

Julian paused in the video, looking directly into the camera lens as if looking through time itself. "Clara, my sweet girl... if you are hearing this, I am so sorry I couldn't be there to watch you grow up. Every choice I made was to build a world where you wouldn't have to live in fear. Arthur... if you are with her, thank you for keeping your promise. Complete the transmission. Let the light in."

The video ended, leaving a profound silence in the cabin. Clara wiped her tears, her jaw setting into a line of absolute determination. "Do it, Arthur. Let the light in."

Arthur hit the final command key. A progress bar appeared on the screen: UPLOADING TO GLOBAL MEDIA NETWORK - 12%... 25%...

Suddenly, the red warning light on Arthur's satellite receiver began to flash rapidly. An alarm beeped sharply from his laptop.
