Chapter 9 - The Siege Begins**

Arthur slammed the laptop screen partially down to shield its light. "They found us faster than I calculated. They must have tracked the satellite handshake."
Outside the cabin, the serene quiet of the forest was broken by the distant, thumping sound of helicopter blades cutting through the heavy night air. High-powered spotlights pierced through the cabin windows, illuminating the dust motes floating in the air with blinding white light.
"Arthur Vance!" an amplified voice boomed from a helicopter loudspeaker, shaking the wooden frame of the cabin. "You are surrounded by tactical response units! Step outside with your hands visible! You have two minutes to comply!"
Clara panicked, looking at the laptop screen. UPLOADING... 58%... 62%...
"It needs five more minutes!" Clara cried out over the deafening noise of the engines outside. "Arthur, we can't let them stop it now!"

"Listen to me carefully, Clara," Arthur said, laying a hand firmly on her shoulder. "In the floorboards beneath the rug in the bedroom, there is an escape hatch that leads to a drainage tunnel under the hill. You take the laptop, go down there, and don't stop running until you hit the main highway."
"No!" Clara shouted, grabbing his sleeve. "I'm not leaving you behind! They will kill you!"
"They want the drive, Clara," Arthur replied, his voice soft and tender. "If I stay here and fight, I buy you the five minutes you need to finish the upload. Your father gave his life for this truth. Now it's my turn to protect it."

He gently kissed her forehead, a fatherly gesture that melted away years of isolation. "You are strong, Clara. Stronger than any of them. Now go!"
