Chapter 10 - The Breath of Life
The sterile smell of antiseptic and ozone greeted Julian as he tore through the fifth-floor corridor of St. Jude's. He discarded his soaked outer jacket in the biohazard bin, scrubbing his hands furiously at the prep station before pushing open the doors of the neonatal intensive care unit.
Elena lay in a reclining hospital bed, her face pale as parchment, with an oxygen cannula beneath her nose. Her eyes fluttered open as Julian stepped inside. She didn't speak; she simply pointed a trembling finger toward the incubator beside her bed.
Julian held his breath as he walked toward the transparent chamber.
Inside, resting beneath warm ultraviolet lamps, was a tiny baby girl. Her skin was pink, her delicate chest rising and falling in rapid, fragile rhythms. Dozens of monitors monitored her vital signs, but the line was steady. Strong.
"She arrived six weeks early," Elena whispered, her voice weak but brimming with immense warmth. "Dr. Vance said... she’s a fighter. Just like her father."
Julian placed his gloved hand against the acrylic glass. A tear broke past his defenses, tracing down his cheek and falling onto his collar. For the first time in his life, the merciless titan of industry felt utterly insignificant in the presence of pure innocence.
"Her name is Victoria," Julian choked out, looking down at his daughter. "Because she conquered the darkness before she even saw the light."
Elena managed a faint smile, reaching across the space to squeeze Julian's fingers. "Is it over, Julian? Are we finally safe?"
Julian looked at his wife, remembering the life raft tossing helplessly into the pitch-black ocean, and the federal marshals currently executing warrants across twenty shell corporations in three continents.

"It's over," Julian said softly, stroking her hair. "There is no one left to harm us."
Just then, the small television mounted on the hospital wall flashed a breaking news bulletin on silent mode: Private Yacht Sinks Off Shore; Two Survivors Rescued By Foreign Tanker.
