SHATTERED GLASS AND VENGEANCE / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

Three days following the confrontation in the lobby, the Vance family estate in upstate New York was quiet under a blanket of freshly fallen snow. Eleanor Vance sat in her expansive mahogany library, staring into an unlit hearth with a half-empty glass of port beside her.

Her attorneys had abandoned her. The corporate lawsuits had evaporated the moment Julian liquidated the legacy conglomerate, leaving her with millions in legal retainers and zero leverage against the Sterling fortune. Her brother was dying in prison; her daughter was committed to a high-security asylum.

The heavy library door swung open silently.

Eleanor didn't look up, assuming it was her butler. "Bring more wood for the fire, Thomas. It's freezing in here."

"Thomas has been relieved of his duties," a calm voice replied.

Eleanor turned around, her heart seizing. Julian stood by the open doorway, wearing an unbuttoned black winter coat over a dark suit. He carried no weapons, no security detail, and no documents. He was alone.

"How did you get in here?" Eleanor demanded, rising from her chair with shaking knees. "This is private property! I'll call the state troopers!"

"Your security staff were on Viktor Kovac’s payroll three hours ago," Julian answered, closing the heavy oak door behind him with a soft click. "There is no one coming to save you, Eleanor. Just as no one came to save my wife when your daughter pushed her to the floor."

"What do you want?" she whispered, backing toward the antique desk. "You already took everything! My family is ruined! My name is disgraced!"

Julian walked slowly across the Persian carpet, stopping directly in front of her. He reached into his coat and produced a plane ticket and a small velvet pouch containing an unmarked passport.

"A one-way ticket to a remote estate in the Argentine pampas," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You will leave tonight. You will never set foot on North American soil again. You will never speak the name Sterling, Vance, or Sofia."

Eleanor stared at the ticket, then up into Julian's unblinking eyes. "And if I refuse? Will you murder an old woman in cold blood?"

May you like

Julian leaned down, his eyes gleaming with the dangerous legacy of the empire he had just burned to the ground.

"I am Alexander Sterling’s son, Eleanor," he murmured. "Don't test how much of his poison runs through my veins."
