Chapter 13 - The Matriarch’s Arrival

The private penthouse elevator chimed, its brass doors sliding open to reveal a woman who seemed to carry the very chill of winter with her.

She was in her late sixties, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-gray wool coat, her silver hair coiled into an aristocratic chignon. Her eyes were an unsettling shade of pale blue, sharp and predatory. Behind her stood two high-powered corporate attorneys carrying black briefcases.

Julian stood in the center of the foyer, his arms crossed, blocking the passage toward the living quarters where Elena and Victoria rested under heavy guard.

"Eleanor Vance," Julian said coldly. "You have five seconds to explain why you shouldn't be thrown out of the nearest window."

The woman smiled, an expression that lacked any hint of mirity. "Is that any way to speak to your aunt, Julian? Or should I say... your sister’s true mother?"

Julian didn't flinch. "I read my father's letter twenty minutes ago. You sent Sofia into my home like a cancer, hoping to tear down what my father built."

"Your father stole my youth, destroyed my family's merchant empire, and hid my only daughter behind a lie of distant cousinhood!" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic facade cracking to reveal decades of bitter, festering rage. "You think you won by locking Arthur away? You think tossing Mateo into a cage ends this war?"

One of her attorneys stepped forward, extending a red-sealed document toward Julian.

"This is an emergency court injunction issued an hour ago by the Appellate Division," the lawyer declared. "Under the terms of the Sterling-Vance 1994 merger agreement, any unresolved paternity claims involving executive board members trigger an immediate asset freeze across all corporate operating accounts pending genetic validation."

Julian took the injunction, scanned the first page, and tore it in half. He dropped the pieces at the attorney's feet.

"You're too late, Eleanor," Julian whispered. "Four hours ago, I dissolved the corporate entity known as Sterling Enterprises. The funds were liquidated and transferred to private trusts held offshore in Victoria’s name."

Eleanor’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated shock. "You destroyed the company?"

"I destroyed my father's playground," Julian said, taking a step toward her until she instinctively took a step back into the elevator. "Now, get off my floor before I remember that you tried to have my daughter murdered."
