Chapter 6 - Smoke and Retribution

The shockwave threw Sofia violently across the concrete floor, her handgun skittering away into the darkness. Dust and smoke choked the air, thick with the sharp stench of cordite. Through the gaping breach in the brick wall, silhouetted against the roaring industrial spotlight of a heavy armored vehicle, walked Julian Sterling.

He held a semi-automatic tactical shotgun across his chest. Behind him stepped four massive men clad in unmarked tactical plate armor, their movements cold, mechanical, and terrifyingly precise.

The mercenary near the rafters raised his rifle, but Julian fired three deafening rounds without breaking stride. The heavy slugs shattered the wooden catwalk, sending the gunman crashing forty feet down onto the concrete with a sickening thud.

"Julian!" Elena cried out through her gag, struggling desperately against the coarse hemp ropes.

Julian’s eyes locked onto his wife, his chest heaving. "Cover the perimeter," he barked to the private operators behind him. "Kill anything that moves."

He discarded the empty shotgun, drawing a heavy black sidearm as he closed the distance between them. Sofia scrambled backward on her elbows, blood running down her temple from a cut sustained in the blast. She lunged desperately toward her discarded weapon, but Julian’s heavy dress shoe slammed down onto her hand, the sound of fracturing bone echoing in the silence.

Sofia screamed, a piercing shriek of agony.

"Did you really believe I spent my father's fortune entirely on corporate real estate, Sofia?" Julian whispered, his foot pressing harder until she wept into the dust. He knelt down, his gaze devoid of human warmth. "I spent my twenties running his illicit logistics pipelines in Eastern Europe. You thought you were fighting an heir. You forgot who built the empire you tried to steal."

He sliced through Elena’s bindings with the folding knife, lifting her gently off the iron chair. Elena collapsed into his arms, weeping uncontrollably, burying her face into his bloodstained collar.

"Julian... the baby..." she gasped, her hands shaking over her stomach. "I felt a sharp pain when the bomb went off."

Julian froze. He looked down and saw a dark crimson stain blooming across the hem of Elena’s white dress.
