Chapter 2 - Traces of Arsenic

The morning sun cast pale white ribbons through the tinted windows of the master bedroom. Elena lay propped against ivory pillows, her fingers tracing tiny circles over her belly. Julian hadn’t slept. He sat in a low armchair beside the window, an unlit cigar rolling between his fingers, his eyes hollowed by an all-consuming fury.

Marcus knocked softly twice before slipping into the room. He held a small plastic evidence bag between gloved fingers. Inside rested the vial Sofia had slipped into Elena's belongings during the confrontation.

"The toxicology report came back from the lab twenty minutes ago," Marcus said, keeping his tone measured so as not to startle Elena. "It’s not a sedative. It’s an untraceable synthetic alkaloid. In small doses, it causes severe abdominal hemorrhaging within forty-eight hours, mimicking a natural miscarriage."

Elena gasped, clutching Julian’s hand so tightly her knuckles turned white. "She wanted to kill our baby... Julian, Sofia was smiling at breakfast yesterday. She asked me about nursery colors."

"She wasn't acting alone," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He stood, pressing a kiss to Elena's forehead, his hand lingering over her swollen stomach. "Mateo’s offshore accounts received three separate wire transfers from Zurich last week. Someone paid them half a million dollars to ensure this child never draws breath."

"Who?" Elena whispered, fear bleeding through her eyes.

"My father's former business partners," Julian answered. "The Vance-Carrington consortium. They know that under my grandfather's trust, seventy percent of the Sterling conglomerate defaults to Mateo if I die without a living heir. And if I perish before the baby is born, the entire estate enters probate."

Elena looked up, terror seizing her features. "Julian, you said if you die... what are you talking about?"

Julian looked at Marcus, then back at his wife. He reached into his coat pocket and placed a crushed silver valve onto the bedside table.

"My town car was inspected at the garage two hours ago," Julian whispered. "The brake lines were severed with a precision laser cutter. Whoever ordered our child’s death was making sure I wouldn't survive the drive to the hospital last night."
