Chapter 11 - Letters from Cell Block D

Two years passed. A letter arrived with prison stationery. Thomas left it on his desk for a week before opening it.

“Dear Thomas,

Claire writes to me every month. She walked ten steps unassisted last Tuesday. She told me an angel protected her care facility. I know that angel was you.

Every day I face the stone walls, I remember the man I planned to take from this world. Knowing you showed mercy to Claire while I sit in darkness has broken the cold place in my heart. Thank you for not becoming a monster because of me.

May you like

— Elena.”

Thomas folded the paper neatly, feeling a long-held weight dissolve from his shoulders. He didn't write back, but he set the letter aside without malice.
