Chapter 6 - The Visitor's Partition

The county detention center smelled of industrial bleach. Thomas sat on a metal stool, separated from Elena by scratch-resistant glass. Stripped of bridal makeup and designer gowns, she looked hollowed out, dark rings carving deep hollows beneath her eyes.

"You really would have watched me choke on that cake," Thomas said, his voice measured.

Elena looked down at her cuffed wrists. "At first, I told myself I’d back out. But the debts... men were coming to Claire’s room, Thomas. Threatening to pull her life support." She lifted her eyes, swimming with genuine remorse. "I hated myself every day I smiled at you. You were kind. Too kind for someone like me."

"Kindness wasn't an invitation to destroy me," Thomas said. "I am hurt beyond words, Elena. But I will not let your sister die for your sins."
