Chapter 5 - The Sister in the Shadows

Thomas could not shake the memory of the unsent letter. Following the address, he drove two hours north to Oak Ridge Care Center. He found Claire sitting by a solitary sunroom window, a blanket across her frail legs, her face bearing a ghost of Elena’s features without the deceit.
"You're Thomas," Claire said weakly when he introduced himself. Her eyes filled with sorrow. "The police visited yesterday. I told them... I had no idea. If I knew what she was doing for me, I would have begged God to take me sooner."

"Did she do all this... for your medical bills?" Thomas asked, voice thick with conflicting pain.
"She watched our mother die in agony because we had no money," Claire whispered. "Elena swore she’d never let that happen to me. But she lost her soul trying to keep that promise."
