Chapter 12 - Return to the Ruins

Six months later, Elena returned to the quiet coastal town where it had all started.
The Sterling mansion stood empty, its windows boarded up, weeds choking the expansive driveway where she had once stood in the rain. The city had seized the property, slating it for demolition to build a public park and community center.
She walked past the shattered front doors and stood in the center of what had been the grand dining room. The antique wallpaper was peeling, revealing raw plaster beneath. The silver candelabras were gone, sold at a bankruptcy auction; only dust motes danced in the pale afternoon sun.
Her designer heels clicked softly against the bare wooden floorboards where the Persian rug had once rested. She looked down at the exact spot where the silver spoon had fallen.
She knelt slowly, brushing away a layer of dust. Beneath the cracked baseboard, a tiny, forgotten glint of tarnished metal caught her eye.

Elena picked it up, rolling it between her fingers. A low hum behind her signaled she was no longer alone in the ruined mansion.
