Chapter 15 - The Ocean Keeps No Secrets

Elena stood immobile on the rotting terrace as Marcus’s words sank into the marrow of her bones.

""Show me the transfer slip,"" she commanded, her voice dropping into the dangerous register that had broken corporate empires in Geneva.

Marcus held out a crumpled, damp piece of thermal paper retrieved from a harbor courier box. Elena snatched it, her eyes racing across the encrypted alphanumeric routing codes.

The bank was authentic. The routing number was linked directly to an offshore maritime sanctuary in the South Pacific. But the signature authorization code at the bottom was something only three living people could possibly understand—a unique mathematical cipher her father had taught her on an antique chessboard when she was nine years old.

The king does not fall; he relocates.

Elena folded the slip tightly, slipping it into her tailored pocket.

""What do I get for giving you that?"" Marcus begged, his knees almost giving out. ""A job? A house? Help my mother, Elena. Please.""

Elena stepped down the cracked terrace stairs into the waiting black sedan, her security detail immediately closing ranks around her.

She rolled down the tinted window just an inch, looking out at the ruin of the Sterling legacy and the broken boy who had brought it upon himself.

""You get your life, Marcus,"" Elena said coldly. ""Consider it generous.""

The engine roared to life, leaving Marcus Sterling standing in the dust of his former empire. Elena leaned back against the leather seat, tapped her communication array, and set coordinates for a secluded harbor in French Polynesia.

Her father was alive. And the war had only just begun."
