Chapter 6 - Unraveling Threads

Within forty-eight hours, the Sterling stock dropped forty-two percent on the international exchange. Creditors circled the family estate like vultures, demanding immediate settlement of loans guaranteed by nonexistent assets.

Marcus sat alone in the dim wood-paneled library of his mansion, a bottle of scotch half-empty beside him. His mother had taken to her bed, claiming severe palpitations, refusing to face the media trucks camped outside their iron gates.

""There must be a loophole,"" Marcus muttered, frantically flipping through legal contracts. ""She signed an NDA when we began dating. She signed a waiver!""

His attorney, an exhausted man whose retainer had not been paid in three weeks, closed his briefcase with a resounding snap. ""Marcus, an NDA does not cover criminal fraud or physical battery. Furthermore, the documents she signed were countersigned under an assumed name you never officially validated. Legally speaking, she was an auditor observing your operation from the start.""

Marcus looked up, horror slowly dawning behind his bloodshot eyes. ""From the start? She planned this?""

""No,"" the attorney said quietly. ""She gave you three years to prove you were honest. You proved you were a thief and a coward in three minutes.""

The telephone on the mahogany desk rang, its shrill chime cutting through the room’s gloom. Marcus grabbed the receiver.

""Elena?"" he breathed.

""Pack your mother's bags, Marcus,"" a cold voice answered. ""The bank has foreclosed. The marshals arrive at sunrise.""
