Chapter 9 - Altitude of Betrayal

The cabin grew instantly freezing as the pilots throttled back the engines. Elena felt the sudden drop in cabin pressure, her ears popping violently.

""Why?"" she asked, her voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline flooding her veins. ""You brought me back. You helped me destroy Marcus.""

""Marcus was supposed to marry Chloe, absorb the Sterling fleet, and hand over the deep-water shipping lanes to our Mediterranean consortium,"" Arthur explained, checking his gold cufflink. ""You returning to the board was useful only as a battering ram to clean out the messy Sterling legal entanglements. Once Marcus went down, you were supposed to step aside and let me manage the assets.""

""I am my father's daughter,"" Elena said coldly. ""I never step aside.""

Arthur stood up, motioning toward the bulkhead door. ""Your father died in an unfortunate sailing accident off the coast of Monaco, Elena. History has a terrible habit of repeating itself for Vance heirs who fly too close to the balance sheets.""

The cabin door opened, and two armed security personnel stepped through the curtain.

Elena didn't move. She simply tapped twice on the face of her smartwatch.

Suddenly, the cockpit door banged open. The copilot stepped out, holding a service weapon aimed directly at Arthur’s chest.

""Flight plan altered, Mr. Vance,"" the copilot declared flatly. ""Federal prosecutors are waiting on the tarmac at Zurich.""
