Chapter 4 - Broken Glass

The sound of gunfire did not come as a single blast, but as three rapid, suppressed thuds that shattered the ornamental glass panels of the estate foyer. Maya gasped, instinct pulling her upward, but Arthur’s arm instantly wrapped around her waist, dragging her down behind the reinforced mahogany desk near the corner of the room.

""Stay down,"" Arthur murmured against her ear, his breath completely steady now that physical danger had materialized.

From beneath his tailored jacket, he drew a sleek matte-black sidearm, checking the chamber with a practiced, fluid motion that Maya had never witnessed in their modest suburban home. The quiet, gentle husband who had spent Sunday mornings making coffee and fixing window blinds seemed to dissolve entirely, replaced by a lethal operative operating on pure instinct.

Footsteps moved across the broken glass in the outer corridor—deliberate, measured, entirely devoid of haste.

""Arthur,"" a voice called out, smooth and carrying a faint European lilt. ""Did you really think locking a vault in Switzerland would deter me? You know better than anyone how my family operates.""

Arthur didn't answer. He reached up, pressing a concealed switch beneath the desk rim. The lights in the study instantly extinguished, plunging the room into dense darkness illuminated only by the faint glow of the garden lights through the window.

Maya leaned close to Arthur, her heart hammering against her ribs. ""Who is he?"" she whispered.

""Dorian Cross,"" Arthur replied in a breath so low it barely reached her ears. ""The patriarch of the Sovereign Syndicate. The man your adoptive father spent his entire life running from.""

""Arthur, please,"" the voice echoed again, closer now, pausing just outside the double oak doors of the study. ""Let us not embarrass ourselves before the girl. I only came to claim what has always belonged to my bloodline. You bought an empire with Vance’s stolen patents, and you bought my daughter's loyalty with an ordinary life. But debts must be settled.""

The oak door creaked inward. Arthur leaned out and fired twice through the wood. A groan echoed from the corridor, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor. But almost simultaneously, the glass window behind Maya and Arthur exploded in a rain of crystalline shards as two heavily armed men in tactical gear dropped into the room from the balcony above, their red laser sights snapping directly onto Maya’s chest.

""Move,"" Arthur shouted, lunging over Maya to shield her body with his own.

A single red laser point hovered unmoving over Arthur’s heart, while a third man stepped silently through the shattered window frame.
