Chapter 3 - The Geneva Breach

The private lounge at the estate was eerily quiet compared to the chaos left behind in the garden. Maya sat on a velvet armchair, sipping lukewarm water, the heavy silk of her wedding dress pooling around her ankles. The flashing red and blue lights of the squad cars outside cast long, rhythmic shadows across the ceiling.

Arthur stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, the encrypted phone pressed against his ear. His jaw was clenched, the calm, invincible persona he wore at the altar giving way to a rigid, calculating tension.

""Report,"" Arthur ordered, his voice clipped.

""The breach occurred at 20:14 CET,"" the voice on the other end answered, distorted by scramblers. ""They bypassed biometric clearance using a high-level biological sample. Arthur, they didn't want the bonds or the bullion. They took box 409.""

Arthur closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. Maya watched him closely, sensing the sudden drop in temperature inside the room. For three years, she had known Arthur as a man of few words, a quiet protector who lived simply when he was with her, shielding her from the predatory world of high finance. She knew he had power, but she had never seen fear in his posture until this exact moment.

""Seal the perimeter around the primary residence,"" Arthur instructed quietly. ""No one leaves the grounds. Tell Gabriel to prep the jet.""

He hung up and turned to face Maya. The harsh moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face.

""What was in box 409, Arthur?"" Maya asked softly, her eyes clear and perceptive. ""You knew Tanya was embezzling funds months ago. You could have arrested Marcus in his office. You chose my sister’s wedding for the arrest. It was a distraction, wasn't it?""

Arthur stepped closer, dropping to one knee before her chair so their eyes were level. He gently took both her cold hands into his large, warm palms. ""I thought I had orchestrated every variable, Maya. I wanted to eliminate Marcus and strip Tanya’s influence over your life in one decisive stroke so we could walk away completely.""

""And the distraction?"" she prompted, her heart beating faster.

""Marcus wasn't acting alone,"" Arthur said, his voice laced with regret. ""He was a pawn used by someone far more dangerous—someone who needed me in this country, surrounded by press and federal witnesses, completely pinned down while they took the only leverage that guarantees your safety.""

Maya frowned. ""My safety? I'm an art teacher, Arthur. What leverage could protect me from your world?""

May you like

Arthur reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a small, tarnished brass key she had never seen before. ""Box 409 contained the original adoption papers and genetic registry your father hid twenty-six years ago. You aren't a Vance, Maya. And the man who just broke into that vault is your biological father.""

A sudden crash echoed from the front courtyard, followed by the deafening sound of shattering glass.
