Chapter 8 - The Undercurrent

The iron door slammed shut behind them with a heavy, magnetic seal, followed instantly by the muffled, shuddering boom of the detonation above. The concrete walls of the escape tunnel groaned under the pressure, dust cascading down from the ceiling like powdery snow.
Arthur hit the emergency release valve, locking the pneumatic bolts from within. The tunnel fell into absolute silence, illuminated only by the faint, crimson glow of emergency low-voltage strips running along the floor.
Maya pulled herself up against the cold wall, her white gown blackened with ash, her palms bruised and bleeding. She turned to look at Arthur, who was leaning heavily against the reinforced iron hatch, his chest heaving, his face pale under the red lights.
""You're hurt,"" she said, her voice dropping to a whisper.
Arthur pressed his left hand against his side. Dark, viscous liquid seeped between his fingers, staining his black tuxedo shirt. A stray fragment from the initial blast had torn deeply into his flank.
""It's superficial,"" Arthur grunted through clenched teeth, though the tightening of his jaw betrayed the agony. ""We have twenty minutes before Dorian bypasses the thermal overrides. The tunnel leads straight out to the private dock on the river.""
""We need to stop the bleeding first,"" Maya said firmly, tearing a wide strip of clean satin from the inner lining of her petticoat. She stepped toward him, but her movements were stiff, guarded. ""Sit down, Arthur.""
Arthur slid down the wall, exhaling a ragged breath as Maya knelt before him, pressing the fabric firmly against the wound. He winced, his hand coming up to gently clasp her wrist.
""Maya... looking at that contract... what you saw—""
""You bought me,"" she said, her voice devoid of tears now, cold and steady as she tied the knot tightly around his waist. ""My father sold me to pay off his debts, and you purchased my future to secure control of Apex Global.""
""Robert Vance made that deal,"" Arthur spoke softly, looking directly into her eyes. ""He was dying of cancer. He knew Dorian Cross was closing in on your location. The only legal way to place you under the sovereign protection of my family's private trust was through marriage. I promised your father I would protect you. I waited until you were of age, established a normal life, and intended to never tell you unless the syndicate found us.""
""And the love?"" Maya asked, her voice cracking slightly for the first time. ""Was that part of the corporate contract too?""
May you like
Arthur reached up, his blood-stained thumb gently brushing against her cheek. ""I didn't plan on falling in love with a woman who looked at broken discarded paintings and saw beauty in them. That was never in the contract.""
Suddenly, the red lights lining the tunnel blinked out, plunging them into utter, suffocating darkness. From above the iron hatch, the rhythmic, electronic hum of an industrial thermal drill began to whine.
