Chapter 5 - Blood Ties

The man stepping through the ruined window frame looked strikingly familiar. He wore an immaculate charcoal overcoat, unbuttoned to reveal silver cufflinks identical to the design Maya had sketched in her childhood notebooks—a crest featuring a double-headed serpent entwined around a spear. He possessed high cheekbones, dark, almond-shaped eyes, and an expression of chilled indifference that mirrored Maya's own features with terrifying precision.
""Stand down, Arthur,"" Dorian Cross said softly, raising an elegant hand.
The two tactical operatives lowered their assault rifles slightly, though the laser points remained fixed on Arthur’s torso. Arthur remained crouched over Maya, refusing to yield an inch of ground. Maya stared past Arthur’s shoulder at the older man, her breath trapped in her throat. Seeing him was like looking into a distorted, aged mirror.
""Twenty-six years,"" Dorian murmured, stepping closer, his shoes crunching against the scattered shards of glass. ""Your father—or rather, the cowardly thief who raised you, Robert Vance—stole you from the maternity ward in Milan. He believed taking my only heir would destroy my syndicate from within. Instead, it merely forced me to rebuild in the shadows.""
""He saved me from you,"" Maya found her voice, though it trembled slightly. ""He spent his whole life hiding because you are a monster.""
Dorian offered a thin, aristocratic smile that did not touch his eyes. ""He was a thief who stole a child to secure corporate funding for his dying technology firm. When he realized Arthur was ruthless enough to hunt him down, he sold the company to him, traded you away, and staged his own bankrupt suicide.""
Maya’s gaze flicked to Arthur. Arthur’s jaw was locked, his eyes refusing to meet hers. A cold dread, far more terrifying than the men holding rifles, crept into Maya’s veins.
""Arthur..."" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the estate’s backup generator. ""Is that true? Did my father sell me to you?""
""Maya, don't listen to him,"" Arthur said harshly, his voice tight. ""He is twisting the past to divide us.""
""Am I?"" Dorian pulled a folded, yellowed parchment from his overcoat and tossed it onto the desk. ""The original contract, Maya. Dated twenty years ago. Arthur Sterling didn't marry you out of quiet love. He married you because the trust agreement stipulating control over the Apex patents required a marriage certificate with the legitimate Cross bloodline.""

Maya looked down at the document. Her father's distinct, shaky signature rested beside the bold, sharp autograph of Arthur Sterling, dated decades before they ever 'coincidentally' met at a local gallery.
Before Arthur could speak, a sharp metallic click echoed from the doorway behind Dorian.
