Chapter 13 - The Sovereign Archive

Gabriel laid the yellowed documents across the metal table. Beneath the harsh fluorescent lights, Maya saw bank transfers, corporate registries, and satellite maps spanning four continents.

""The Sovereign Syndicate is not an ordinary crime family,"" Gabriel explained, his voice low and precise. ""They are an ancient cartel of banking dynasties that finance global conflict, manipulate market collapses, and control sovereign debt. Thirty years ago, your biological mother, Elena, realized Dorian intended to use a newly developed digital banking backbone—the Apex algorithm—to permanently seize control of European liquidity.""

Maya leaned over the papers, her mind racing. ""The algorithm my adoptive father supposedly invented.""

""Robert Vance didn't invent it,"" Gabriel stated. ""Elena did. Vance was a systems architect hired to build the security architecture. When Elena discovered Dorian’s plan to weaponize the system, she gave the encryption keys to Vance and ordered him to take you into hiding. But the master encryption requires dual biometric confirmation to unlock or dismantle.""

Maya touched her own chest. ""My DNA.""

""Yours, and Dorian’s,"" Gabriel nodded. ""As long as you remained hidden, the system was frozen. The billions held within the Apex accounts could not be moved or converted. Dorian could not access his true wealth. That is why Tanya was positioned to drain your secondary trust—they wanted to financially pressure you into coming forward. That is why Arthur stepped in to marry you, placing you under corporate immunity.""

The sound of an electronic monitor chiming from the adjacent room drew their attention. The lead surgeon stepped out, pulling down his mask.

""The hemorrhage is contained,"" the doctor reported. ""He is stabilized, but the anesthesia will keep him unconscious for at least six hours.""

Maya let out a long breath she hadn't realized she was holding. Relief washed over her, but it was immediately supplanted by cold, hard clarity. She was no longer a victim caught between titans; she was the axis upon which their entire world turned.

""Gabriel,"" Maya said, turning back to the dossier. ""If Dorian gets his hands on me, what happens to the system?""

""He unlocks the vault,"" Gabriel answered bluntly. ""He absorbs twenty percent of global liquid assets, Marcus and Tanya become figureheads in his new regime, and Arthur’s corporate allies will be eliminated within forty-eight hours.""

Maya picked up the leather dossier and closed it firmly. ""And if I destroy the system?""

May you like

Gabriel stared at her, a glimmer of profound respect touching his stern features. ""Then the Sovereign Syndicate collapses permanently. But to do that, you must walk straight into Dorian’s headquarters.""

A quiet knock sounded at the warehouse door. A security operative stepped in, his face tight. ""Sir, we have an intercepted broadcast. Tanya Vance is live on international news.""
