Chapter 2 - Cold Ledger

The flash of federal badges shattered the illusion of the luxury twilight reception. Guests began backing away toward the garden perimeter, whispering frantically into their phones while security struggled to maintain order. Marcus looked desperately at Tanya, his jaw shaking, his polished facade collapsing into pathetic terror.
""Tanya, do something!"" Marcus hissed, backing toward the altar steps. ""You said you cleared the shell accounts through your father's foundation! You sworn this wouldn't trace back to Apex!""
The guests gasped. Tanya’s mother, seated in the front row draped in pearls, pressed a hand to her chest and slumped into her chair. Tanya grabbed the microphone again, her voice cracking over the speakers. ""Turn off the cameras! All of you, turn off your phones! Marcus, shut your mouth!""
Two federal agents walked steadily down the marble runway, ignoring the panicked guests. They bypassed Marcus entirely and stopped directly in front of Tanya. The lead agent produced a warrant stamped with a crimson seal.
""Tanya Vance,"" the officer stated, voice emotionless. ""You are under investigation for corporate espionage, unauthorized fund diversion from Apex Global affiliates, and wire fraud.""
Tanya stared at the paper, then burst into a sharp, hysterical laugh. ""Wire fraud? I’m an interior designer! I don't work for Apex! My sister married a vagrant who lives off odd jobs!""
Arthur stepped down the marble runway, holding Maya’s hand. ""You don't work for Apex, Tanya. But you held power of attorney over Maya’s trust fund for five years. The fund you believed was empty because our father died penniless.""
Maya took a slow breath, stepping beside Arthur. Her voice was steady, cutting through the humid evening air. ""Dad didn't lose his company, Tanya. He sold it to Arthur fifteen years ago. He set up the trust so that whoever loved without greed would inherit the majority shares. You spent five years funneling my monthly stipends into Marcus’s offshore shell to buy his loyalty and fund this extravagant farce.""
Tanya’s eyes bulged. She whipped her head toward Marcus, whose silence was a confession of guilt. The realization hit her like an iron hammer: every diamond on her neck, every champagne tower, every flower adorning this venue had been bought with stolen funds stolen from the sister she had spent a lifetime ridiculing.
The agent clamped cold steel cuffs around Tanya’s manicured wrists. She pulled back violently, the microphone clattering loudly onto the stone floor. ""Maya! Tell them to stop! You owe me everything! I raised you!""
Maya didn't flinch. ""I paid every debt tonight, Tanya.""

As the agents led Tanya and Marcus down the aisle, Arthur’s phone vibrated against his palm. He glanced down at the encrypted screen. The message was from an unlisted number: The diversion worked. They took the bait at the wedding. The real vault in Geneva is breached.
Arthur's grip on Maya’s hand tightened imperceptibly.
